Touring through Yorks to Northumberland

  1. Hi, we are looking to tour from Norfolk up to Cragside in September. Want to stop 1 maybe 2 nights around York and then up to Cragside ( Rothley/Morpeth) coming back down via Derbyshire. Anyone know of any B&B's in these areas with secure parking? Cheers, Chris

  2. If you are going to "Tour" then may I make a suggestion. Heading for York isn't going to take you through the most pleasant scenery. From Norfolk take A17 to A16 towards Boston turn off into Kirton follow the signs and road to Conningsby then to Horncastle. From there head to Caistor then to barnetby le wold. and join A15 over the bridge (Bikes are free) towards Beverley If you want to see the town ride through the centre. if not follow the signs to Driffield then to Scarborough then whitby via the coast and then on to Guisborough. You want to be looking for Band B in Whitby that time of year they will fight for your custom. After Guisborough your on your own. I dont go any futher North cos its always raining up there

  3. Thanks Higgy, I was planning the first part pretty similar ( my son is based at Conningsby) but was avoiding the bridge as the missus hates them! She also wants to visit a couple of places in York, but I might have to do a detour up the coast road if it's that good!

  4. A19 up out of York is pretty good, through Tyne Tunnel is a blast especally if there is a group of you with loud pipes, the Northumberland coastal route is really nice, done that may times on way back down from Scotland.

As for places to stay have a look on www.beds4bikers.com, a few listed but Malton one is nearest to York, about 30/40 mins, but I am sure you could get somewhere in York pretty easy.

  5. I'm sure there's bike friendly places near Helmsley too.
