Hi all, I keep coming across the term "TPS reset" and people talking about it on here having to be adjusted when fitting termi's and ECU. Can someone provide me with some info on this? What is it? Why does it need re-setting? How would I know if my bike has been done? Or anything else on this matter. My 1098 is fairly new to me and came with the Termignoni cans and ECU already on so would like some info on this. Thanks in advance. Ben
The ECU needs to know when the throttle is closed. It gets this info from the TPS. The usual indication that TPS is out or faulty is stalling when coming to a halt at a junction. On your bike the TPS is reset via software. You can download JPDiag for free and get the leads off ebay for under £15. Just search Free Diagnostic Software on the forum. A TPS reset is recommended after an ECU change as the setting can be slightly out.
Thanks Chris. I was hoping you would catch this. Probably best get this checked by the shop. Ive had no problem with stalling but then I've only done about 40 miles in the last 3 months on it. I'll have to see how it goes. One thing I am finding is that its a bit of a pig to ride slow around town. Im talking cruising at 30-40mph at lowish rpm. Seems like its got to be in a low gear and higher revs or its going to stall. Plus the throttle at the same speeds seems to be all or nothing. A bit snatchy from closed to open? Could this be a fuelling issue/TPS? This was partly why I was asking about the TPS. However, I am reminding myself this is my first V twin and therefore probably just how they all are. Worth asking tho as like I say I don't know what these should be like until I get use to it. Thanks again Ben
With an IL4 you can use the old 3 for 30 for riding round town. With a V2 you find 2 for 30 works better together with a little clutch slip when required. A change to a 14 tooth front sprocket would also smooth things out. A sticking EXBV can also cause power delivery problems. Personally, I'd junk the EXBV. If not, then you need to ensure that it is lubricated. I found copper slip best for this.
Thanks Chris, some good info again there. I'll get the guy at the shop to look at this to make sure all is good and lubed up. What would be involved with getting rid of it? I assume its not just as simple as binning it?
It needs disabling in the ECU so you don't get an EOBD on the dash. The pulley and spring can be left in place as they hold the EXBV in the open position. The cables and motor can then be removed. Some of the guys on the forum have fitted an arm to the motor that fools the ECU into thinking the cables are still attached (ebay is your friend).
Just out interest, can a bike that has DP Termignoni's, ECU & filter fitted forget that it's previously had it's TPS reset? No noticeable problems last year, but first decent run this year (last Tuesday) & throttle was very snatchy on pick up plus poor deceleration on closing. Bought a Ducati battery conditioner late last year & was told to connect it to the DDA, didn't check the bike when I powered the charger up, but several hours later the dash was lit up & working. Apparently the 848 Evo doesn't charge through the DDA, but I shouldn't have caused any damage to my bike
Who told you to connect to the DDA? Pay them a visit and kick them in the NUTS. The 4 way connector on the DDA is identical to the diagnostic connector on later bikes and it is these later bikes that the charger connector is meant for. The DDA connector is wired 1. ECU 17 Body, 2. Earth, 3. DTC/ECU 20 Body/Dash and 4. DTC pin 4. The later 4 way diagnostic connector is wired 1. +12v, 2. Earth, 3. CAN H and 4. CAN L. So you have put a 12v feed to the ECU. I think you have got away with it as pin 17 on the ECU gets a +12v feed from the ignition. That is why your dash was awake as the charger was powering the ignition feed. Your symptoms could just be down to the bike needing a tune up. Start with a TPS reset then progress to getting the throttle bodies balanced and lubing the EXBV.
Should've mentioned that the bike is under two years old & less than 2500 miles, first owner had the kit fitted by m&s newcastle, it's had 2 services (600 mile & 1 year). I bought it last summer, put it away for winter, bought the battery conditioner from dealer 50 miles away (no dealer locally), they did offer to check the bike over but it was SORN'd. Did about 180 miles last Tuesday, my first decent run this year & bike seemed more out of sorts than me, it's not due it's next service until June (2 years), seems odd that it should need a tune up?
Been out on it again this afternoon, 100 or so miles. I've been running it on V power nitro now for about 4 weeks, can live with the opening of the throttle response, it's the revs not dropping/lack of engine braking that I'm struggling with. Had been wondering if it was me rather than the bike...
just had my tps reset and a quick look over by chrisw from the forum this morning. tps seemed to be a bit out but was soon sorted. he also did a quick scan and test to make sure all was working as it should. many thanx, mate. ian
