Track Bike Idea

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Attila, Oct 16, 2014.

  1. The wife is starting to become a bit more amenable to the idea of me building another track bike and it has started me thinking (a dangerous prospect). Now nothing will happen until i finish my road bike project (unless i see a bargain too good to miss) but there is no harm in planning (daydreaming) is there?
It would be very easy to buy an old 600, strip the road gear off it, refresh the suspension, stick it in track fairings and thrash the nuts off it, but, i fancy something a little different.

My current thinking is to build a lightweight special based around a 749 frame and swingarm tweaked to accept an 1100 monster engine. I have a 999R front wheel for my road bike, i would source an 848 one to replace it on the road bike and a matching 999R rear for the track one. Fit 1098 Showa forks with ktech internals and a decent rear shock, radial 848 evo brembos etc.
Bodywork wise i would look at a 749/999 tank, 848 style track single seat unit and maybe a Rad Corsa fairing like this.

Thinking about it i reckon i could build a very light bike for a reasonable cost, with a punchy engine and good suspension and brakes it would be a riot on track too.

What do you guys think? am i barking up the wrong tree or does this idea have legs?

  3. I say get building! Although I do always keep in the back of my head the fact that building means I'm not on track so I guess that's a personal decision?

  4. light weight and punchy was exactly what i thought would be good as well!

my 900ss just didn't have enough poke on the straights, so fancied a bigger engine..... but also fancied a more cutting edge frame and suspension. now got my 1100 engine bits and a 1098 frame and back end ready to go. putting on my suzuki front end with newly purchased carbon wheel, so just need to finalise the rear end. going to try to make my own tank and airbox just for fun.

and strangely enough, i'm also looking forward to finishing my road bike project so i can get started! winter will be good this year :)

so i'll agree with exige, time for the spanners!!

  5. I like that a lot!

  6. I'll be right behind you... ;)

Have fancied doing this since I was what a few guys did to their DD bikes, like under 150kgs wet. Now that with a 90hp 1100 DS motor in there...one for the plan when I have my next job change, have moved house and have a big workshop garage to store them all in :)

  17. ...well it should be better than the average shopping trolley so that's a start :)

  18. High speed wheel wobble will be an issue!!

  19. Negative rake on the steering angle me thinks is a tad over the top! Oh, and it's not rolling?
You haven't seen the non rolling bits yet and these could well compensate for it...

  20. Nope, I've been travelling the eons of time for, well, some time now, well actually for all time
