Track bike opinions

  1. Evening all,

    now I've moved house and settled in (built a workshop:smile:) I'd like to get a track bike for next year after having a long break from track day and the odd race. The 1098 is just to nice to track, plus with my 'crashy' riding style it would end in tears.

    so, I'm looking at spending up to about 3 -3.5k all in, I am considering sticking with ducatis, maybe summat like a 749/999 maybe even a fireblade rr5 (got a fireblade itch to scratch) I've never owned either, so going back to the 749, does it make a reasonably reliable/ fun track bike. I read in 05 ducati let the engine have some more power, there much difference?

    any input appreciated

  2. Whatever you buy, get a track bike not road bike and convert. For the same money as a road bike, you will get one thats had all the right stuff done plus no doubt WOW and spares. Saves a lot of hassle, but remember often domt come with a V5, no biggie (mine hasnt) long as all the engine no and frame nos ok

    but whilst were on it, you can have my R1 2002 injection, full 11mnth mot which it passed flying colours, 11k genuine miles, new heavy duty race clutch, new chain, new set of supercorsas (200 rear), wearing tech 3 fairings with racing and road nose cones should you ever want to go for a blast, original tank and silver black fairings in the loft as well. Great bike and only £2750.

    would easily keep up with most on track apart from well ridden top tech stuff like the s1000rr etc

    honestly, all these shameful plugs :)

  8. I note that SV650's seem to be a very popular budget track bike. I also note that they go round corners on rails when ever I've shared a track with them. However I'd have a 748/749 if i was to have a dedicated track bike. Cheaper than an 848 which i'd have if i had more money. Anything bigger would be wasted on me.

  9. From £4000 upto £5500 depending on what bits you want with it.It has v5 in my name,it was a cat d but has been fully checked out and lazer lined to check for true with recipts,belts ect done
     
  10. That's not a bad price IMHO.
    My 748/848 project has cost close to that to assemble.
     
  11. As much as I love my dukes I wouldn't have one for a track bike. Jap stuff is cheaper to run / crash and they go like stink. Get a decent jap 600/750/1000 with suspension upgrades already on it and you can't go far wrong IMO. Remember you'll end up wanting 2 sets of wheels in this country which for dukes are pricey! I just bought an 07 R1 with ktech / Ohlins inc spare wheels for less than 4k..... Having sold a decent spec 07 zx6 for 3k.
     
  12. Get a decent ready built 600/675 and thrash the nuts off it! Some of the most fun you can have on track.
     
  13. You can do 10+ trackdays a year on a jap 600 and not have to spend a penny outside servicing and consumables. Unless you are a god it will probably lap any track faster than you are capable of going in stock trim.

    I loved the GSXR's before I gave up but my mates all swear by the R6's now.
     
  14. Yes and the problem I have is chopping and changing between a V twin and an inline 4. My day bike was an ST4s and my track bike was an R6 and beleive me they didn't mix. Ended up buying a 748sp and fell in love. Got a 1200s Multi for every day and ac748R now. Andy
     
  15. Same reason i picked a 848,only selling because i dont get enough track time as my work is summer based,so i will be using my 899 for trackdays next year.
     
  16. I've raced a super sport spec 07 r6 a while ago.... Awesome bit of kit, had a brilliant couple of years with it. But I've been there done that, fancy summat a little different now.
    if I'm honest, unless I really love it I never keep bikes to long. I'd very much doubt I'd race again, so it doesn't really need to be competitive, just good clean fun :)
