I'm seriously considering selling my Speed Triple and buying a dedicated track bike. I love taking the 848 on the track but don't feel 100% comfortable simply because it's too expensive if anything goes wrong! I'm thinking about either an r6 or a Kawasaki zx6r. Ideally it would be a crash damaged bike that's been written off that I could sort. The question is getting hold of one. Has anyone bought a written off bike and how did you go about it? Many thanks Alistair
Buy a pre built track bike, you'll save yourself a hell of a lot of hassle. Look on motoforum and trackdayriders, there are always plenty of well prepared bikes with full spares packages on there
Why not just get one that is track ready? Costs far less in real terms and you know its ready to rock
Get yourself an outfit (and someone like bradders as a passenger........he likes being near the ground ) so as to boost the following of sidecar racing....... AL
My thinking is that if you buy a bike that's been ragged and crashed on a track already there could be a whole heap of issues with it. Would a Cat d right off be a good option? Yes it might not have track bells and whistles but would it be a good place to start? Any advice appreciated here
Nope buy a bike thats already done. Right kit, likely serviced well, and a few spares to boot. Cat D good option if you want a cheapish road bike, providing the repair isn't too bad
I bought a track ready GSXR 600 thinking i will save me the hassle and expense of doing my own, still spent a bloody fortune anyway :Arghh:
something like this... superstock only 975 miles.... £5000..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRIUMPH-DAYTONA-675-SUPERSTOCK-RACE-BIKE-2010-MODEL-/321351768216
Did this myself, using the 1098s on the track was not nice at all for fear of throwing it down the track. Got a ready built 2009 zx6r dedicated track bike that had been written off through frame damage but a brand new frame bought for it.... down side that people harp on about is no v5 but I don't have any problems, just make sure you get lots of receipts. Cheaper in the long run than building it yourself and you can still add cans etc as you go later. Have thrown it down the track last year and was over 2k in parts to get right again... had it of been the Duke it would have been game over for her!
I'd go with a "proper" track bike that has been built for that purpose. There are some nice ones about
5k! Ill be looking for something for about half that! (looks nice though..... Thanks for posting the link)
I sold a really good K2 GSXR600 last year, ex Guy Martin TT bike with ohlins fork internals, Maxton rear shock, pc3, arrow exhaust system, full set of spares, wets on wheels, tyre warmers, paddock stands the lot for £1400. Thats around the going rate for them, they are brilliant on track and cheap as chips for spares too.
what about this .....http://www.motoforum.net/topic/97860-cbr600f3-top-spec-complete-race-package-2-sets-wow-etc/ all for £2k
Or speak to Tony at T3 Racing about getting an ex Triumph Triple challenge bike? they go for decent (ish) money, depending on whether they are one of the tidy ones or one of the more 'grazed' ones.
That looks good! I guess one of the things that concerns me about a 'prepped' tack bike is knowing how reliable its going to be. I'd almost rather have a stock bike with none of the porting/tuning and other stuff so that I know its going to be reliable and I can them make improvements as I go. I'm under no illusions that I'm not going to be a quick rider having only done a couple of track days in the past, so getting a 'race prepped' bike isn't that important. Im sure that the prepped route would be cheaper in the short term though
+1 for that... All for a bog standard engine for reliability. No need for rebuilds every two seconds or expensive special parts
To be fair most track bikes have standard engines anyway, just an exhaust and a power commander normally.
Thanks for everyone's thoughts. I have a couple of options after some phone calls today so will see what I end up with... I'll update this thread if I get something. Ali
