Howdo!! Any advice on which Action Camera to go for?? Looking at mounting solutions, easy to use, easy of file transfer and reasonable sound. Will be used for trackdays. Many thanks Pablo
A lot of people seem to use a Go Pro and no doubt can give you advice on that. I use a datalogger which has a basic camera setup included to give me overlaid information on a video when I play it back, not HD etc., made by PZ Racing in italy. Probably a more expensive than a Go Pro I would imagine. There are plenty of separate mounting solutions available for the Go Pro, check out eBay for some ideas.
I've had GoPro and Drift. I prefer Drift although I would say the video is slightly better on GoPro. Drift HD.
I just bought a GoPro for the Jerez trip. See the Jerez nolimits thread for some stills of the high quality video as YouTube reduces the resolution. It was a toss up beteween the GoPro and the Drift but for me the GoPro won due to the ability to shoot in 4k resolution and then later zoom into it and still have HD quality film. Also there are a huge amount of mounting accessories for the GoPro. The battery life is pretty rubbish at only an hour but you can buy two aftermarket batteries and charger for only £20 so its not an issue.
Its like anything it depends on what you want from it & how much you are prepared to pay. I had a Contour way back but now have a GoPro 3 & 3+ and getting a 4 soon. Res wise I don't think there are any better. See any program where they use these mini cams and they are always GoPro. @royalwithcream has pretty much summed it up, and running 4K as he said means you can either use that res for stunning video or go down to HD (still dammed good) and have a x4 digital zoom. The standard editing software GoPro give you is pretty good too. The downside is they are plastic and not nearly as good looking as others, but I wouldn't be seduced by that, for me res and quality is everything, even though it looks like a plastic box of matches
I use a contour HD which I bought a while back, i preferred it to the gopro as its less bulky. One of the mounts which come with the kit is a nice curved helmet mount, so ive mounted mine on the side of my helmet at eye level, so basically the camera sees what I can. I stuck a 32gb memory card in it and used it all last year for my rides out. Then when I get home I just plug it into my laptop and upload the footage. Its water proof etc. Got some cracking footage of police hiding behind bushes with their speed guns on it.
I thought the helmet mounted footage was on of the best points of view but unfortunately it's banned from a lot of tracks. Apparently Schumacher is thought to have got some of his injuries due to the helmet mounted cam twisting his head/neck?
Contour2+ , gps data overlaid in a side-screen. Awesome quality image & sound plus you can add an external mic too give narration of your ride. I also believe unless its a discrete camera, you will be stopped from using it even on a track-day.
I use a drift ghost s and the quality is amazing, those go pros look too big, square and bulky compared to the sleek shape of the ghost. It records 1080p at 60fps and the romte control is on a strap that can go round your wrist so is easy to start/stop even while riding.
