Track Lap Times?

Discussion in 'Trackdays & Rider Skills' started by JoePeps, Jun 13, 2022.

  1. Although there’s no prizes for winning a trackday, I always wonder what is classed as ‘decent’ trackday pace.
Plus maybe to track any improvements as I’m sure most people always want to get quicker.

    So my current PB’s are:

    Donny GP 1.43.78
    Snetterton 2.07.00
    Cadwell 1.42.19
    Anglesey 1.39.04
    Oulton 1.52.65
    Silverstone 2.27.98

  2. ask the question online and you’ll get a load of hilarious answers. Ask it on trackday addicts and you’ll get 100’s of answers from people who can’t ride for shit telling you bsb times.

Those times are very respectable mate x

On a race weekend you’d drop 2/3 seconds (everyone does usually) straight away if not a bit more so with that said at Donington you’d be sub 1:40 which is getting on for respectable race pace :) (for example).

Same at Cadwell, sub 1:40 is getting on for club race pace.

sub 1:50 at Oulton same story :)

  3. Plenty of club racers can’t beat 1’ 40 at Cadwell even with a 1000. If you really want to compare, go check out TSL results for clubs :upyeah:

  4. I think another thing to remember is that you’re not always on new rubber. That is to say you run them and get the life out of them.

You’re also on a really nice bike, not a 7grand r6 so you’ll naturally be more restrained.

my best ever lap of Oulton park was a 1:43 on the 600. And I did that after I’d being taken out at Druids earlier in the day. Basically because I didn’t care anymore, the bike was already rats  it’s amazing how much time you’ve got in relaxing and not caring.

    You’re doing mega mate

  5. Certainly respectable times. What are you riding?

  6. Thanks mate.

To be honest I’m really consistent and find it quite hard now to make much of an improvement as I’m in a rhythm. Which also means brand new rubber or the last day I do on a set doesn’t make much difference to the times!

I’ve no intention to race as i don’t see myself quick enough to get decent results so I won’t bother, but nice to try and improve.

If I could get all my times below the next bracket of 5s I’d be over the moon but not sure I’ve got much left in me.

Edit, I missed the 1.34 bit at Oulton, that’s mega fast

  7. V4S, either on slicks and HPK discs or supercorsas and standard discs, and EBC GPFAX pads. Standard other than that.

  8. Have you tried track training with Ellison or Spike Edwards? Probably make far more progress than 20 TDs doing the same thing over and over.

  9. Yeah I want to do a day with Ellison, had planned it for this year but left it too late so will be booking something in for earlier next year :upyeah:

  10. Ignore the 1:3* time. That was a typo (I wish) haha.

I usually had 2 seconds or so in a new set of rubber. But there has to become a point when you say to yourself “how far am I taking this?!”

If you’re doing those times on a trackday. You’d have no problem in club racing. I promise you that mate. You wouldn’t embarrass yourself in newcomers at all. Racing brings you on massively (for the time you’re doing it). It’s not banked though and drops off you again when you stop depending on how often you’re riding. I couldn’t ride a greasy stick right now lol!

riding is like anything, the more you do it, the better you get. There’s nothing wrong with those times at all. As said, especially on such a nice bike and stretching tyres out. I’d be hesitant to push much harder on stretched tyres anyway tbh.

If you really want to go faster, do some coaching with someone like dean and then get a few trackdays on the bounce at the same track with new rubber. You’ll bank the times and then the monkeys off your back ;)

  11. Great shout. I’ve got his number if you want it bud. James isn’t bad either.

Tbh all the ‘names’ are good.

  12. Just edited my first reply as I didn’t catch that, even a 43 is mega on a 600!

I’m not sure I’d enjoy racing enough to justify the costs, and probably more chance of stacking it which I really don’t want to do. So trackdays is enough of a fix for me.

I’ve done 20+ days for the last 3 years but wound back a bit this year and will probably do 15 max including 3 days at Portimao in September.

  13. Spike Edwards does (did) a service where you send him go-pro of a session and he'll send a very detailed response back and include a track guide, was about £100 IIRC. I got it for Snetterton and thought it was good value.

  14. Yeah I’ve seen that but I’d rather have the 1:1 in person I think.

I did a day at Donny and shared a garage with him and the lad who was being taught, he took him from 48’s to 42’s in one day which I thought was a hell of an improvement!

He’s very blunt though, Ellison seems much friendlier which I think I’d learn better from!

  15. Chris Butcher, ex CSS guy, does some great stuff too. UK based so may be worth a look. Performance Coaching I think it's called? @t3scn is smashing times with his help

  16. I'd recommend Gary Walton of not so fast. I did a day with him at aragon in April. Had him on day 2 of 3, and from day 1 to day 3 went 5.5 seconds quicker

  17. I'm a softie southerner from Bournemouth and didn't consider him blunt, I think he's just Northern. He was direct, which I'm fine with, as time is precious and I don't need any smoke up my arse.

  18. I can only relate to Donington here as it’s the only place I can use my noisy bike. And I’d say 1.42 is a decent fast group pace. Last time out I was running ~1.44 ish. Or so I was told, don’t time myself. There are one or two lads come flying past but not many.

I think we all know what to do at this level to get better lap times. Well I do- I just daren’t do it  Have you seen my bike? It’s lovely :)

  19. Fair enough maybe he just wasn’t too bothered in chatting as I wasn’t paying him for his time!

  20. Fair enough as well. I only met him remotely so it's hard to say. Was it at track?
