This eternal, non stop ever continuous question re track rubber and ppl's thoughts... I do grow tired of arguing with myself :Headphone: inside my head. So myself and rdryder are going back to Cartagena next March. Booked and all, 3 days. Two 1098s's flat out..." braaaap " as bradders would say ! He'll be using tyre warmers, I wont. So i will be doing the usual 1/2 laps warming up in a 15/20 min session to geat heat into the rubber. Id be average speed on track, not slow but not ragging it either. I was there this year on the 848 so this should be intersting if not more fun. So what would you go with if you were me ? Im not out to set fast times, i just want that "flow" bang, one corner to the next, right gear, bang, nailing double left...etc etc. Opinions on cold pressures too welcome. We're hopeful of air temps around 24 Deg cel. tks
get some tyre warmers - it's not just about being able to go fast straight away, it more about heat cylces on the tyre and keeping them in good condition thru the day. Every time you heat the tyre and then let it cool it will "go off" a bit. with warmers you do one heat cycle thru the day...without you will do a heat cycle every session!! - I wouldn't want to be on your tyres come day 3!
tks lads im really all over the shop. Been used to bridgestones for yrs but now trying new stuff. I might just go with the SPV2's for the moment. Re tyre warmers, yeah, im gonna have to get front paddock stand too for SPain. Caaaaa--ching !
the standard SC road tyres are awesome and good enough for anyone, plus if you get road ones you dont NEED warmers but, as above it helps both mentally (tyres already hot) and with longecity (heat cycles). Get the track ones and you realy need warmers as they will take longer to warm and realy dont like too many heat cycles dony know where you are bsed but I have a spare front stand you can borrow if needed and ocal, plus some spare warmers (no idea if they work, came with my track bike)
We were at Cartagena at the end of March this year and my 748R was shod in Metzler Racetech Interact K3s. Good warm up time, good confidence enspiring levels of grip and well capable of lasting all 3 days. In fact they are still on the bike after 2 further days in the dry at Brands and the Ducati day in July on the Silverstone GP circuit. I have a K1 for the rear and a K2 for the front ready to go on and I'm hoping for more grip to push myself a bit more. Life will of course be less. The K1 andK2 were bought at a Brands FE track day for £275 the pair and are the tyres used in the Superstock 1000s BSB support race. Well worth being on your list. Andy
Quite a few people in Almeria last week had the superbike pro slicks and the wear rate was much better than my Super Corsa road tyres and they were on S1000rr's. I'll be going with them next time.
Imho if you run fast group Inwould stick withthe SC, I found the pro slicks (the trackday cheaper ones right?) were far less grippy than tue SC they replaced and slower turn in etc as profilt quote flat
that's interesting to hear. S1000 very different bike to compare I suppose though as traction control, maybe less corner speed etc.
Dunno, my mate raced on them after had done a day at Cartagena and couldnt wait to get them off. He used tham for several rounds and loved them and the. Wear really was pretty incrediblle. I am a bit quicker thru the corner tho, and that was on 848 rather than gixer Wear v grip, not sure you cam have both
if money was no object I'd run SC2's and take about 4 sets for 3 days I think ! But it is (of course ! ) so I'll try the pro's next and see how I get on.
I might just go with the SC's. I mean id be quick novice if you get me, but plan to try and move into inters - taking my time of course. I aint chasing time. tks for the offer mate re the paddock stand, but Im in DUblin, be cheaper to buy than post...lol Ive Metzlers on the 1200 Tenere, diff tires yes, but the grip from them the Metz is amazing for such a big bike, so id imagine those rcetech are as good if not better (?). Its a tire ive been wanting to try. be interested to hear how you get on
If you are new or new ish to the track and just doing one dayers then I wouldn't think of another tyre than the road compound supercorsa. Buy em fit em forget em
I was going to offer you the use of a front stand as well but if you're in Dublin it may be a tad prohibitive! I got mine from Demon Tweeks, it wasn't much to be honest and its been pretty much invaluable (I collected it though, not sure what their p&p charges would be however).
tks Ian, would you believe i picked up one for 10 euro on a local adds site ! All i need know are warmers
I'm having this same conversation in my head but with sc from bsb, vs new 60 vs old 55 and finally vs Dunlop ntecs. Arghhhh!
60s will be really tall, improve side grip and make the bike steer quicker. Will also give you a couple more mph on the same gearing Www.gearingcommander.com
