I have just purchased an '05 MTS 1000DS and it's fitted with a used Pirelli scorpion on the front and a brand new ContiMotion on the rear. It's not filling me with confidence having mixed boots on it. *Should I keep the rear and replace with a new front to match? *Should I replace both with new and sell the existing rear? *If I where to replace both, what should I go for? I'm intending on using it 2 or 3 times a week in mixed weathers.A Sunday ride when its dry occasionally. it wont be tracked as I have a bike for track use (maybe once out of curiosity!).
Dump that weird combination and go for some Dunlop Roadsmarts. Excellent all round tyre. Tyres are your only source of grip and you need as much confidence in them as possible.
Having ridden most of my time on Michelin Pilot road 2's and 3's (94K miles) and the write up they get they would be my first recommendation Pro tyre are a national fitters with very competitive prices oponeo do them cheap online if you fit them yourself or a tame tire fitter Cheap Car Tyres Online » FREE DELIVERY » Oponeo.co.uk You would do best to get a 2 compound tire for mileage and grip in all weathers Avon storm 2 ultras I had were good lots also recommend the Dunlop Roadsmart 2 Andy
Tyre prices vary considerably but i prefer getting a good deal from a local place where they fit them and i can watch them being fitted.
I used Pilot Roads on my Multi thou and they were really good, never had any issues even riding pretty fast and in all weathers. Having said that, I also like the Dunlop Qualifiers ...
When the Michelin Pilots wore out, I swapped to Avons after a multi-tyre comparison test included the hugely overlooked Avons and they came out top, over all the usual suspects. I preferred them over the Michelin Pilots, more confidence inspiring for me. Came with a lifetime guarantee against puncture and any other damage - I was so impressed, I fitted Avons to my Mille R and have been delighted with them. Went to Prague on the Multi and a different trip to Spain, Portugal and France and can say the Avons have excellent road manners in torrential rain or baking sun.
Of course..apologies; the Multistrada got a set of Storm Ultra 2 and the Mille got a set of Viper Super Sports. The Multi picked up a nail in the rear tyre in France, but held pressure so managed to ride home and then had the tyre replaced on the spot by the dealer under the warranty scheme.
The Avon Storm Ultra 2s are good tyres, offer a lot of grip wet or dry and lasted for ages - I binned mine when they squared off, just had loads of tread left. I replaced them with Michelin Pilot Road 3's - which are an amazing tyre and quantifiably better than the Avons - a truly excellent trye.
Thats what the ZX6 is for dude!! Well attacking the race tracks anyway....the kitty litter is a little more forgiving than the tree's,kerbs, cars and lamposts that are surrounding the B roads round my way!!
I went for the PR2's in the end. Went to my local garage and took his advise and watched them being fitted. Thanks everyone!
Thanks for your advise. I opted for the PR2's after reading the feed back and talking to my local Garage. I heard of two people on MTS 1000's that loved them after doing 80k plus. Will forward your choice though if I'm asked in future.
its money well spent, you won't regret it. just popped a new rear on mine at the weekend and it is amazing how much more stable, smooth, precise it is in the corners now. Only trouble is it encourages the wrist to twist it more
