Time for some new boots on my PS! With the sport classics having spoked rims, they are fitted with an inner tube. Having done some reading, it seems that some tubeless tyres can be fitted providing the inside of the carcass is not too rough or ridged. Apparently this can cause friction between the tyre & tube resulting in a tube failure. I am looking at Conti sport attacks as I have road attacks on the Monster 1100 Evo & really rate them. Because I cover so few miles on the PS each year, the tyres need replacing due to age rather than wear. I don’t ride in the wet so a soft compound would be fine, wear rate is not an issue. Any advice or experiences with tyres for SC’s welcome. Thanks.
I sent an enquiry to Continental & received the following reply: You can fit all of our tyres with inner tubes provided the wheel rims are not designed for tubeless tyres. The ContiSportAttack 4 would be my choice. There may be some tyres from other manufacturers that can not be used with tubes but they should be marked ‘TLO’ or ‘Tubeless Fitment Only’
I have the stock tyres on mine and i think they're fine for sunny days with no real issues, i think you could be over thinking it in my opinion, but good luck with your research.
I lost a bit of confidence in the Phantoms after a “moment “ going round a tight left hander but not at speed. It could have been that the tyres were getting a bit hard due to age. In addition I have noticed that some Pirelli tyres on the market are made in China and you don’t find out until they arrive. Andy from A18 tyres refuses to fit them & sends them back. I know he has had issues balancing them & doesn’t rate them at all. All Continental’s are made in Germany as far as I can tell. Nice sunny days only for me as well
Is there an alternative for a little more money on top, or possibly not the way they rule the world on manufacturing.
BTW, do you have a connection with the Vulcan? I saw it fly at the Waddington Air Show just after it had been restored. It was magnificent & brought a lump to my throat.
Regrettably, you are probably correct. The pandemic and our lack of domestic PPE manufacturing should be a warning sign but maximising profit in the short term is sadly the mantra these days.
Not sure about a lump in throat, more for me eyes on stalks and that sound track's unique....breathtaking.
I am aware that some SC’s have been fitted with tubeless rims. However, I think the spoked wheels are an intrinsic element of the bikes visually. Also, the brake calipers are specific to the standard rims I believe so it would be more complicated than just changing to tubeless rims.
I mean add a sealing kit to the inside of the standard spoked rim, this then means you can get rid if the tubes and fit tubeless tyres to the original spoked rims. I bought a Japanese kit off ebay to do the job properly, dimensioned correctly for the SC rims, though I have seen diy solutions with sealant. Cheers Grant
