I need/want to replace the current tyres as the rear was manufactured in 2017, a (Michelin Road Pilot 3) and the front from 2020 and a Mitas Sport Force +? (120/60ZR17 55W). THe bike has been stood for approx 2 years (one of those outside!) so have little faith in them even though the front is as new (as in no wear). I'm not going to be riding at stupid speeds or getting my knee down; so something that is reasonably priced, that will be safe, handles ok and long lasting - and a pair that match! Any experience and suggestions appreciated - just guess we all have individual preferences but... TIA R/R
Are you planning on touring/commuting mileages ? If not then long(er) lasting tyres may age out before they wear out.
Good point Macca! I'm unlikely to tour on it, not that I've tried or had the opportunity. More likely sunny days into the Peak District and may be the Lakes? Given the weather, it'll remain in the garage!
Tyres are a personal choice thing. For not a lot of miles travelled and your sort of riding, consider Pirelli Rosso IV or Michelin Power 5.
I'd probably recommend the basic diablo at about £160 a pair. They are old technology but ride nice and should build up confidence. I've seen before, people who don't ride alot fit mitas and stop riding that bike.
Agreed and, IMHO the Pirelli Rosso are excellent. Plenty of grip and decent wear but I'd recommend fitting a 120/70 on the front.
^^^^This I had these on my KTM 790, the best tyre I’ve used and cheap as chips, I have still the front tyre with enough tread as the rear lasted 4k. I had a free set on Michelin Road5’s in the garage or I’d be on my 2nd set. Only ever considered Mitas to be the go to for spotty teenagers, lad has one on his Aprilia SX50 (on when we bought it)but then he’s not exactly pushing the bounds of performance……
Bridgestone S21 or S22’s are pretty good. Suits the chassis and are a little newer “tech”. Not much in it price wise with Pirelli. A cheaper alternative BT016 Pro.
Many thanks guys, I appreciate all the suggestions, personal choice and tips on size. I bought the bike knowing they'll need replacing having been stood outside. I've no experience of Mitas so happy to buy a matching pair of a brand I've heard of! Mind, by the time I get it 'road worthy' it'll be winter......many thanks. RR.
I've enjoyed Metzeler M7 and M9 on my 748 doing a mix of weekend evening fast road, touring and a couple of track days. I find them to have pretty good feel, plenty grip and they wear quite well
