Tyre Size On A 600ss 1996 120 70 17 Clearance Issues ?

  1. I want to fit some sticky track tyres to the 600ss and the preferable size is 120 70 17 rather than the 120 60 17 and wonder has anyone had issues with clearance on the mudguard when fitting the larger profile not worried about knocking out the speedo reading any thoughts ?

  2. The 70 profile is standard on the 900...........

But depending on which forks you have and how the mudguard is mounted, you may have to raise the mudguard and bring the forks through the top yoke more........

Then you have to watch the clearance of the mudguard to the underside of the bottom yoke and the brake hoses, under hard braking.

If you have Showa forks from the earlier 900s I have a Cad detail drawing for laser cutting some risers for the mudguard.

You will also find the bike doesn't half lean over on the sidestand........hence dropping the forks through a bit....or you have to add a 5mm plate to the foot of the stand.

That's all because the rolling diameter of the 70 profile is nearly one inch greater than the 60.........so the front end of the bike is raised by about half and inch, thus slowing the steering.......again, another reason for bringing the forks through a bit more.

The speedo on the 600 and 750 with the 60 profile is ambitious, whereas with the 70 profile it is more or less spot on.

  3. Seems a lot of hassle just for a tyre change will stick to the standard sizes and buy some stickier tyres for the road cheers :upyeah:

  4. I know, 'cos I fitted a 70 profile.........

.....but the reason why the racers and I did it is because the 60, if you study it, can easily roll over in a bend.......very shallow sidewall.

Plus the SS has very soft ally wheels, so with the lower profile, a pothole could cause a ding in the rim.

  5. all the DD guys run a 120/70 so fits fine.

  6. It seems to depend on how the mudguard is fitted.......

.....On both my Marzocchi and my Showa forks with mounting lugs on the fork bottoms, I had to raise the mudguard by 12.5mm........

Others seem to use the bands around the fork bottoms, so they can be slid up a bit....

  7. and they use dunlop qualifier 2's. A great road tyre and no complaints from the lads racing this year. No tyre warmers used and doing sub 1min laps of brands on shitty under powered 583cc 600ss things.

  8. I believe that the 900 mudguard has the holes slightly lower to raise it up sufficiently. You could fit the 70 profile tyre along with a 900 mudguard.

  9. I fitted a 70 profile (various tyres - currently Supercorsas) to my 600 and 750 ss. easy fix - make the mounting hold on the mudguard a few mm bigger and it raises it sufficiently!
