Tyre upgrade options... again?

  1. hey guys,

The Scorpions are now overdue for replacements and I've been looking at a few options.

I was pretty well set on Michelin PR3s as I've not heard too much other then praise for them so far but lots of people seem to be mentioning wet grip as a big positive.

As I generally only ride in the dry where possible I'm not sure if this will be a useful feature for me.

They are deeply unattractive tyres too, especially the strange front, (I know, it doesn't matter) which is worrying me, they look more touring and less sports than I would like.

Then I noticed the new Pirelli Angel GT tyre reviews floating around, looks sporty and OE fitment on the Multi GT.

My question is this, has anyone any experience with them yet?

Would be for 95% dry road, 5% wet, 0% off road work.

  2. If I were you I'd go for Dunlop SportSmart's - fantastic in the dry and they were fine in the wet too - got about 4k out of them - just fitted PR3's because I'm off to Wales soon....

  3. I fitted the Angels and found them very reassuringly grippy in both (very) wet and dry. Had to change them when I decided to fit an Akrapovic end can because I'd bought a 50 profile instead of the 55 and the tyre hit the can. Only issue was the round trip to Le Mans for the GP started to square off the rear because we ended up doing a high speed dash because of the lousey weather. I'd still have them if not for the Akrapovic. Andy

  4. Just get the PR2?

  5. Wet or dry use the PR3's - forget the looks after all they are all black and round!

  6. I've just put a pair of GTs on mine.

Only fitted on Friday, but I had a spirited 200 miler on Saturday, (thanks 990glen) they seems rock solid to me, with no 'moments' that used to get from the front Scorp.

I noticed the bike turns slightly wider, but that could be down to the cupping on the old front tyre.

    I'm happy with them.

    Greetings

    Ian

  7. I'd second what Bob said, Dunlop SportSmart's, had a pair on my KTM and they are fantastic tyres. I also had PR3's on a GSA. I don't rate them as highly as the Dunlop's especially if its predominantly dry riding.

  8. Rubbish Dawg, rubbish rubbish rubbish. What is the matter with you people PR FOOKING 3. And I'll have no more about it.

  9. And don't listen to that Bob Cooper. He's from Sheffield so he's not even a proper Yorkshireman!!!!

  10. I'd forgotten about that Bob. Bloody brilliant and most of it is that close to the truth there not really taking the piss.

  11. Everyone is entitled to there own opinion, yours just happens to be wrong...

  12. A set of MPR3's are going on (Mutley) next week. What's the psi for trackdays please. Oulton beckons. I will of course be taking the panniers off!

  13. What is the average life span of the Scorps?

  14. 31 front 34 Rear worked for me with the Michelin PR3's

  15. Thanks Veetwin. Will have a Scorpion o/e rear tyre with a few thousand miles left on it going for £30 if any ones interested. It was a replacement rear from a rear puncture last October. The front o/e was fine so didn't swap the set then.

  16. Ive just put Dunlop Roadsmart II's on.

    They are fabulous.

  17. I punctured my rear PR3 at Thruxton the other day - Small slit possibly from a piece of carbon fibre on the track - and it would not plug so new PR3 fitted at Micheldever Tyres. Found that the way to scrub in a new rear is to do one lap with a bit of care (it actually did not move at all) then just ride normally :) Mind you the right hand side of the tyre does look a bit sorry for itself now!

  18. I've had a couple of weeks on the Dunlop Roadsmart II's now and they are wonderful (in the dry, not ridden wet).

Spoke to Dunlop Technical and they advise pressures of 32 F and 35 R which is a bit different to the Scorpion. Interesting, stiffer carcass I guess.

  19. Metzeler Z8 Interacts are supposed to be even better in the wet than PR3s. I've had PR3s but wouldn't have them again - I'd have PR2s (PR3s are just PR2s with sipes) or Z8s. Just fitted a set of SportSmarts and they are fantastic in the dry and fine in the wet (though nowhere near PR2/3s but that's a trade off I'm happy with).
