1200 Tyres Tyres Or Tyres

  1. So I have a 2011 1200 strada and have been running Pirelli Angel GT which have given plenty of grip but once they go out of shape (but still usable tread) feel like riding on ball bearings, looking on youtube I find a guy who recommends either the Angel GT II or the Scorpion trail 2 also been looking at Michelin road 5 or 6.
    I mainly use my bike for all day riding around Devon and am planning on touring Spain and Portugal again this year.
     
  2. Tyres are very personal and responses to your post will be just that, a personal recommendation. It is very common, when making progress on engaging roads, for the Multistrada to step the front tyre, it is a “characteristic” of the bike which IMO is not something unique to one particular brand of tyre. IME, high mileage from a tyre is not compatible with grip on the limit. My preference is for the Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE on my 2012 Multistrada, on which I do upwards of 7,000 or 8,000 miles a year, so 2 pairs of tyres a year. Andy
     
  3. You'll be hard pressed to buy crap tyres. It's whatever your preference is but buy the best ones you can afford.

  4. I have used Scorpion, Angel GT 2, Dunlop Sportsmart 2 and Michelin Road 2, 3 on a multi 1200.
    All good, all loose their shape and drop off in performance, though the Michelins were best at end of life.
    A few years now since I had a Multi, but maybe consider the Conti Road Attack 3. Running these now on my last two GS but also on a 1290gt. They continue to perform to end of life better than anything else I have tried. Though they become more sensitive to having the right tyre pressure.
    Once road and ir temperature crank up, 30 plus along with pushing on, they start to tear, but nothing dramatic. This was after a week in the Picos of hard riding on the the 1250gs. Pretty much the same experience on a 1290gt in Germany a few years back. Good in the wet too.

  5. Totally agree. Think it's common that one develops a liking for the tyres you have so long as they fulfill your needs. Sure others might be better in one regard or another but sticking with the 'devil' you know...

    For me this is Michelin Roads, yet to try the 6's, the 5's ticket all the boxes, had them previously and the price made it an easy choice.

    Need some new ones before a trip to Germany in June, might look at what alternatives available when the time comes... But then again might try the Road 6's...

  6. I'm a Michelin user and have been for years.
    On the 6's now and will need to replace the rear after my solo spring tour to Catalonia for 6-16 April and in time for my Ardennes tour with 3 mates at end of May.
    Been good so far after 3k miles.

  7. Are Michelin Road 5 and 6 as susceptible to punctures as some claim? I'd like to try them but this puts me off. Nothing worse than a puncture on a bike.

  9. I may curse myself, however in about 40k of riding R5 I’ve experienced no punctures and that’s possibly around 30 K of motorway on a very heavy r1150rt and around 10k off Staffordshire/Shropshire and Powys B-roads in all conditions on a KTM 790.

  10. Have used Scorpions Angel GT Michelins many many ,and SE01s when I had the Multi. I fell out of love with Michelin 4 and 5s so switched to SE01 which I loved.
    No longer have a Duke, but today switched from SE01s to Road 6 and I take my hat off to Michelin!! Super feel, totally linear feel , spot on.

    SE1s were 3/4 worn at nearly 7000 miles , strangely enough rear was looking like it lived in dual carriageways, but I am mostly rural riding?? It didn’t feel like that though. All tyres mentioned excellent in the wet, and my abilities are nowhere near the tyre’s abilities.
     
  11. Cant comment on 5s and later but the 4s were bad for me.
    2 rears, both picked up punctures. A bit weird as I have only ever had three punctures in 45 years of motorcycling.
    Both tyres were nearly new, both punctures in the narrow sipes. Both looked like a sharp stone had caused the damage, no screws or nails involved. The third puncture, in an Angel gt was a visible nail….

    I think it is the narrow sipes. I had tyres on my car in France with similar type narrow sipes….had my first puncture in many years, no screw or nail visible. Odd.
     
  12. Thanks all. I'm either going to fit Dunlop Mutants or PR 6 to my Multi V4S in a few weeks.
     
  13. Mutants got a good review on the KTM790 forum. Someone on here put a R6 rear with a Michelin Cup I believe as they were recommended by his tyre fitter. Just to add I put PirelliStradas on my KTM they were a great tyre but wore out in 4K.

  14. Over the 3 multistrada's I've owned, the metzeler sportec m9 rr are by far the best choice for my riding style which is aggressive sports. I don't take it in gravel tracks.

    And yes I've tried the main options, oem, Michelin, perelli, Bridgestone... nothing comes close to the feel of the m9 RR
     
  15. Have had mutants fitted to my dvt since October following them being recommended by @Steelboss (I think?) on here and one of the sales guys at Ducati Worcester saying they were the best wet tyres he had used…and they weren’t selling them.

    massive confidence all thru winter and no noticeable wear after c1500 miles.
