To screen out the bigger world over the past year I bought this as a lockdown present to return to something more appealing. Something like this below (sorry Tommy B for "borrowing" your bike ) but that is sure fine looking .... when it was yellow. . I look at it as a full size jigsaw dipping in and out when the opportunity arises, I am currently addressing the wiring woes that were created when the battery and reg/rec were installed in the tool tray. I have searched the ducati parts fiche files and online photos and I have a copy of the roughly photocopied 998S repair manual that is floating around on the web but I need some help with the following. 1. Does anyone have a photo of where the headlamp relay should be sited? 2. Again a photo of the air sensor in the correct position would be handy? 3. I have bought a standard battery holder, Is this mounted in 3 places? twice on the frame at the top and once through the middle via a long M6 bolt to the water gallery blanking plate and then is there an approx 50mm spacer for this bolt a little similar to that on an ST4s? Thank you for the wisdom.
both relay and air sensor live inside the headlight bucket iirc. I will try take some pics tomorrow the battery tray is specific to the 998s and pretty sure its 3 holes. of the 2 closest to the top, the more central one is for the batt clamp there is one out on the leg on the left. the other is in the middle between the relays and solenoid and above the reg/rec
This may help here’s a picture from the Official Ducati 998 workshop manual showing the position of the air and temperature sensor location. Item number 47 in the picture.
These may help with your battery fixing location , again pictures taken from the Ducati workshop manual.
Brasletti if you pm me your email address I can send you a full parts manual, its to big to post on here
Oh this is marvellous, the wisdom is beginning to flow. Speedy Gonzales, great photos, thank you they will be helpful. That is in the same position as the air temp sensor on a 996, but facing the other way, that is a small 2 wire sensor but the 998 is massive 4 wire block with 2 mount holes in it. There must be a unique plate to mount it or is it just zip tied in place? The In moto online parts catalogue does not show a mounting bracket. Cookster, I have a headlight and support already, thanks for the offer. RCGBOB44, story, It is a japanese 998s mono that was given the street fighter treatment by someone who was clearly very able, the headlamp support and aluminium air ducts are impeccably made, and someone has thrown loads of money at it: STM evoluzione slipper, billet radial brembo m/cs, R&T43 forks, Yoshimua flat track bars but Morris 1100 wing mirrors? We all have our own views on customising and the Japanese take is an interesting one but this has to be the ugliest 998 I have seen so I think I took pity on it and thought there is a good project!
i actually made an offer on this bike couple of years ago with the intension of turning it into a race/track bike. he said no
I remember seeing this touted around the various sales sections for several years now so glad to see it resurface in the hands of an enthusiast.
I just went downstairs and took these pics off my 998. You can see the 3 screws attaching the battery tray. Hope this helps.
Like you said it may not look it’s best at the moment but with a bit of love, and money spent on it it’ll soon be looking a million times better. Here’s a picture of my 998s Final Edition to spur you on.
Guillaume, you star, it is that last photo I was interested in, I will make up a collar to sheath the M6 to go into the blanking plate. That is a very corrosion free example you have there. Speedy Gonzales, you are right it needs to be finished before the quality light sets in, but there is that question of colour!
Yeah, isn’t it amazing? I bought it this summer in the Netherlands. 7000 miles on the odo (it’s a US version). It’s like... brand new. And rides so incredibly well. I almost get tears in my eyes, every time I remove the fairings.
Wow, that looks factory fresh, mine is nowhere near as bright despite only 4000 miles, I imagine it is to do with sitting in a lock up on the norfolk broads for a few years as Chris illudes to as oppposed to its previous life in Japan.
Be aware that the headlight bucket support, mounted on the frame on a 998 is a different design than all previous models (748/916/996) hence the temp. sensor.
DucRider, thanks for pointing that out, I can see that now there is a different part number between the desmoquattros and testastretta for both the bucket and the bucket support, subtle stuff this. I bought a second hand light bucket with various brackets and fasteners attached which is clearly for the earlier bikes hence the lack of fixing point for the big sensor. Before investing anything in the brakes, can I ask anyone who has done a brembo radial master cylinder conversion, which reservoir supports did you use to clear the fairing on full lock for both front brake and clutch? Furthermore, since the bike came with flat bars and I am reverting to clip ons the front hoses are too long. I wanted to go to a 2 hose setup for the brakes rather than having a "T", is it best to route both hoses down to the bottom yolk and then across or to go over the headlight bucket bracket and down for the second hose?
