Hi Guys I'm taking my Multi into the dealer tomorrow to get the heated grips changed (excessive wear) but I also want them to look at another issue that's come up in the last couple of weeks. The bike suddenly seems to have developed an intermittent fault with the throttle response. The throttle also feels like it sticks a bit, not a smooth action and smooth return (throttle spring or the cables need lubrication?). Initially I thought it might be the exhaust valve as it wasn't making a noise on ignition start up. I sprayed it with WD40 which seemed to help it work better. The problem also seems to get worse once the bike is hot. The bike feels like it's either about to rip my arms off at any second, or has no power and requires me to change down. As I say it's only recently and I'm going to get the dealers to look at it tomorrow but wanted to see if anyone else had any suggestions. It was serviced about 3 months ago.
If its been serviced then that should rule out filters etc, does it happen if you re-fuel at a specific garage ? some supermarket stuff is pants, by VW Touareg smokes like its on 60 a day with ASDA fuel.
Nothing to do with fuel, I only ever get good stuff (never supermarket). I'm sure it's a physical cable issue, or something electronic that controls the throttle or exhaust valves. The other day it felt like the throttle would snap if I twisted it any harder, and it also feels like it's not shutting properly when I roll off.
On my recent 4k mile Euro trip, after a few days of wet weather, my throttle action became very graunchy (engine off you could hear it grinding) and would stick on, a bit like cruise control - I could ride along at 80 without a hand on the throttle until the grip eventually shut off. WD40 eventually fixed it, but it took a few applications and a couple of days to work it's way in.
Thanks, it's not quite as bad as that. If it's not a personal question whereabouts did you apply your spray? I had a puncture repaired last night and whilst the exhaust was off I had a good fiddle with the valve. It seems a bit better today so I'm thinking it's a combination of that and the throttle cables.
I had the same problem with the throttle cables, split the throttle tube ends, take both cable's out and spray with WD or chain lube.
Problem solved - it was combination of dry throttle cables and associated fittings, solved with WD40 and the throttle tube was sticking slightly on the bar ends I'd put on. I was dubious about this as I'd put them one a couple of months ago without a problem, but the mechanic pointed out that I'd told him the problem had got worse as the weather got colder. The heated grips were expanding slightly as they got warmer and just rubbing on the bar end a little. They were also softer and more deformed as they had worn down. This also explained why it was intermittent and was also better when the bike was cold - an additional washer when they fitted the replacement grips has solved the problem. Sometimes it's the simplest things...
Twin4me may I suggest the cricket bat grips to stop those expensive heated grips from wearing. Here some pics http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f6/grip-fix-2528/#post27162 inexpensive at £3.00 on fleabay and very effective
