Just because in a sea of sanitisation by more and more electronics the K5 is the seminal roadgoing litre sportsbike. The one I have my eye on is in stealth black, 9k miles, perfect condition and completely standard except for the addition of £2k worth of Brembo monoblocs, levers and master cylinders with Hell lines, R&G tail tidy and crash bungs all round, Stomp Grips and a K-Tech fork overhaul (all standard parts supplied). Asking price is 6.5k. I'm wondering if I should pull the trigger, how I'll get it past the Mrs and where the f*uck i'll keep it .... Other than that its a no-brainer.
K5. Best normal IL4 I have ever owned or ridden. Sold mine for 4k 3 years ago so looks like a better return on your money than the bank.... (Bendy crank R1 is even better though :wink
You've got a few bikes, they all look the same to her and she'll never notice another. A bit like how she gets loads of pairs of high heels past you and your credit cards without you picking up on it. Cue grief from @Ducbird Do it.
You could try - "What, that? New! No I've had it for ages. If you were in the least bit interested in me or my hobbies ..."
It's true it's true , bloody shoes just appear and then it's " I've nothing to wear with them " followed by a whole new outfit.
Not worth it mate. You will always take the Duc when leaving in the morning. It will just sit there in your garage, eating dust... When I got my second bike the Mrs got her nickers in a twist because no room for the car when she comes back from shopping. And once there is a twist, they do not come off that easy :grimacing:
What about the war of attrition approach? May take several months but ends with "Just get the f'ing thing!" Cream_Revenge is in this process right now.
I would be encouraging you Then getting some more leathers boots etc to ride them while you were out Luckily I have my own credit card and no one checking my purchases Think I have had my shoes for years I like handbags though
I know someone who would probably accept less than that for his low miler K5, and his has Carbon BST's :Bag:
I think the Brembos are a more desirable upgrade than BSTs - I gather the brakes are about the K5's only slight weakness - but put me in touch if you would @Exige , if the price is right who knows. I know a Yoshi is traditional but I reckon one of these says "Gixxer" in a rather special way as well
Rides like a twin in its delivery, loads of low/mid torque, as quick as most stuff in a straight line because of that punch, big wide bike that feels like a barge after an 848, brakes are crap, ditch them, and easy genuine 170 rwhp with simple race system, high flow filter and ecu set up. Electrics can be a bit dodgy, they short behind the clocks and inidators. Reliable otherwise. I'd have one for the road in a shot. Wouldn't have one for Track again tho.
I think it has the Brembo upgrade too , he is an automation Engineer who visits our site weekly. I will ask
Was looking for one before I bought the 848. Got fed up with trying to find one in great condition that hadn't been abused. I would buy it if it's as good as it sounds. Just tell the other half that you'll be selling one of the others in the future. The future can be a very long time away!
Never mind adding a bloody Gixer to the stable have you ridden the 888 yet we haven't seen any photographic evidence
The GSXR engine is a good one, an animal. I don't know about the chassis personally.. I have read the 07/08 GSXR chassis was better? I believe the motor crankcases are very similar, engine mounts maybe the same. I recall it may rev higher but has less torque and more peak HP. It makes a bit of a difference on track with someone who can use it. The K5/K6 has timing retard in 1,2,3 gears and might have top speed limiter (from memory) The way we get round this, fit a gear indicator that has various options in it - it's plug and play very simple. HealTech Electronics Ltd. - GIpro with ATRE K5,K6,K7,K8 1000 engines are sort after in a certain racing championships (may increase price) (parts are not cheap but if you have a race licence, considerable savings are offered through Suzuki Race Parts Scheme). I'm sure the championships would swap to a newer motor if they could find one that works as well. These engines are very reliable given how they are used, so are very well developed. These competitors are quite well financed too. Most competitors have 2 motors fully built and ready to go. They are rebuilt at the end of each season. We have two engines, safely making about 200bhp at the crank on stock parts. I do know a few race engine builders that are specialists with this particular engine, K5-K6 and K7-K8 have a proven track record. Although I don't think they build engines for non competitive use that I am aware of. BSD might do (they build some front running GSXR K5-K8 Motors (not as cheap as smaller outfits) . Radical Performance Engines... do some very clever exotic engines, V8 Busa and bored strokes GSXR for hill climb ££'£££. I don't use these. We run a power commander. We do not mess about with the ECU it's not permitted in the regs. I have maps on a laptop that I can alter at the track, A/F built into the dash & data log. I would not be brave enough to ride this motor hard in a bike. I can't imagine how you drive it out of a corner hard (racing) without wheeling or wheel spin, a very competent bike racer once told me, most people can't really exploit that kind of power. He said a well ridden 600cc is plenty fast on most tracks. I bought a 600 track bike but I'm not fast on a bike. This motor will pull @ 400KG. 0 - 60 in less than 3 sec's depending on gearing. Get round Mallory in approximately 41.7 sec's and Cadwell in 121's (with 4 wheels and down force) I guess that makes them pretty solid.
You flatten the bike as much as poss and use a very long wheelbase, right back to the stop, some racers even extend (in the states mainly) I found, with slicks, I could wind on really hard really early (told by a pro I was riding it wrong, one of reasons I sold it, as I was riding like a small bike and grip only lasts so long...) With -1/+2 it hits the limiter in top no problem and gets there with the wheel hovering about a foot off the ground just feeding QS gears. Its an anmal bit not unrideable, thats what makes it just so good I'm talking myself into another here.....
They are awesome bikes I had one from new that I chopped in for my 1198. If funds had permitted back then I would have kept it. Luckily this one came up locally with minimal miles in mint condition so I had to have it. It now keeps my 899 company..........
Here's evidence from the last outing of the Somerset OCD (Old Codgers Ducatisti) From left to right ... old, older, oldest
