Hi all, This thread has morphed a little, so i have edited the first post to avoid confusion... and deleted the text about the engine purchase for my future project. It is now focused on my 1992 900ss! The background of the project is a turning my 1992 900ss into more of a lightweight track and road bike. I've owned it for 3 years now and done about 12 trackdays in the first 2 years and already have: - Nitron Race shock - 0.9kg/mm linear fork springs (just being updated with a complete Suzuki K6 600 front end) - Hi-comp pistons - carbon slip ons - open top airbox This is a work in progress so please ignore the wires hanging out and roughly cut bits of frame
Chris at CJS can bypass the immobiliser I believe allowing you to run any dash - ECU. He can re-map the bike as well. If you can get the dash then all the better as this reduces the agro with the wiring loom and keeps the system more integral. Few lads on the Supersport - Ducati.ms - The Ultimate Ducati Forum have fitted 1000DS engines to the older SS.
Thanks for the lead! Moving from carbs to injection is new for me so wasn't quite sure where (or with who) to start. And re the dash, after putting an Acewell on my BMW r100 I've become a bit of a fan, so would like to add one to my ss to streamline the wiring and lighten the front a bit. Hopefully I've made all my wiring mistakes and learned my lessons on the bm......
I don't know what you'd need in terms of the engine etc.. but you need to keep us updated as you go along
Yep be nice to see pics of the dash! I used an ST3 dash on my Superlight as I liked the digital display and the analogue style rev counter. All the best!
madly painting and sourcing parts before i start a new job monday..... but looking to get some photos up the weekend after..... because a lot of this "hasn't happened" yet stay tuned!!
Is the 1000 engine that much better than the 900, or would it be more cost effective to tune the 900 lump? Just seems to me that it would be a bloody expensive way to get just a few more ponies.
It happened! Well..... it's happening A few photo's of work in progress. With a big "thank you" to Ray and the lads at Rosso Corse in London for letting me turn their forecourt into a butchers yard as i do my work. Firstly please ignore my paint job.... done outside in an open tent on a windy day with a rattle can..... it was better last time! Can you notice the upgrade? mmmmm need to replace the blingtastic brake lever!! Need to finish the temporary dash layout but a lot of weight has gone, thanks to a Motogadget M-unit and Acewell dash... and the Highway Dirt Bikes switch gear on the left for 1. Start / Kill 2. Hi / Low Beam 3. Horn. Indicators are on the clutch lever Whoops! was a bit wonky from the Donington low side but all sorted now This is definitely a work in progress but WOW it feels so much better on track now. Just need to add a subframe for headlights and it will be back on the road too.
oh, and what it looks like underneath the fairing! A bit more of a trim than allowed in DD... My front sub frame hacksaw handiwork.... More to come once I have tidied up the electrics and worked out where to put my 3 mini ultrabatt batteries.
I had a question about how hard it was to fit the complete suzuki front end to the SS..... answer is: It's not! There are 3 key changes 1. 2 head bearings: Simply Bearings Ltd 52K/30KW Narrow Section Steering Head Set Taper Roller Bearing 30x52x16mm £17.95 each 2. Bump stops, i bought 2 rubber reservoir holders from a suspension site. Mounting Hardware Fox remote reservoir rubber mounting block £4.01 each 3. Drop the triple clamps down the forks. The GSXR forks are a few cm too long but there is almost enough adjustment available on the fork body. I am going to add some shims from 1 and 2mm alloy to give a little extra support for the clamp overlap. Moderately easy. Main benefit is the light wheel, but the super plush suspension and epic brakes aren't so bad either If you wanted to just get the forks, they are the same diameter as the SS 91-98 forks around the clamps (as far as i can tell........) but then you need to start mucking about with spacers and bearings on the axle. Oh and the forks are: Suzuki gsxr 600/750 k6/k7 Hope that helps.
Yeah the wheels are pretty cool! Not sure what it weighs yet but will find some scales once i've got the headlights on so it can be compared to other road registered bikes, not just track bikes...... give me a few weeks, but i'm looking forward to seeing what i get too
Err, excuse me for being a bit thick, but aren't you running carbs? Those things under your tank look a lot like a couple of carburettors. Like the Suzuki front end!
Well spotted! I really should change the name of the thread...... I now have a 1000 engine but it is sitting in a shed! Once track day season draws to a close i am going to put the 1000 internals / heads etc into a 999/749 block, swingarm and frame with the suzuki front end. So this thread has sort of morphed to the current bike which is indeed a 1992 900ss with the original engine. And the suzuki front end is exceeding expectations. The biggest surprise was the brakes. I was quite happy with the original anchors, but the suzuki ones are verging on mind bending re feel, progressiveness and stopping power.... though the most modern bike i own is a 1994 BMW R100R so my exposure is limited....... In some ways i wish i'd done the forks then got rid of the extra weight as i don't know what has transformed the feeling of the bike whilst turning ..... could have been the wets as well! Going to another track day this coming Monday at Snetterton where i'll be trying some 2nd hand BSB Super Sport tyres and tyre warmers ...... hoping it will be dry so i can get a full day in and really get used to it all and start to push in the dry.
OK, i'm getting to a point where the main components are finished..... in draft form at least. But one thing that hasn't worked is how the headlights look. Can anyone suggest a source for the lights from the 750 F1 below as they look a lot better than my 4 1/2 inch, 6cm deep lamps.... The look i want, looks like 5 inch very shallow old school lamps: The look i have :-( But otherwise the bike is going well. lost lots of weight.... And had some good track days!
I can see I have caused a little confusion so have edited the first post to focus on my current bike, not my next project, now for winter.... putting a 1000 2v engine into a 999 frame. Most traces of engine purchasing ECUs and other craziness have been removed..... Apologies for the confusion!
