At Portimao; day 1 of 4. Not hot; only 21 deg C 848 started to splutter at end of day. Won't do it under 6000 RPM. once it hits 6-7000 it coughs and splutters and RPM indicator on dash flashes on and off with each splutter.... Disconnected Traction control and Quick shifter... No change... Now completely stumped... All advice most welcome. All Ducati workshops now closed for day / or weekend... Cheers, Bob
you can only go checking the obvious to start with just to cross them off the list - battery terminals? relays/connectors? done fuel filter lately or tank off?* lines trapped?* pump sounds normal? how many volts on the battery on a fast idle? *forget these, unless a massive coincidence as you said dash flashing - many threads have featured this so hopefully someone who remembers more will be along soon.
Left track now... Looking to get a whole list of things to check fit tomorrow... Bike ran fine for 4 sessions, then went sick in a blink of an eye... Removed TC and QS... Checked battery terminals... Going to pull her apart more tomorrow and check all connectors etc... Got full race system so no Butterfly valve? Or am I wrong?? Someone suggested crank sensor, but not found that yet... Will check fuel pump, could be that, hence tied to revs?? Not checked battery voltage, will put meter on it tomorrow... Lithium unit with built in test meter that says it's ok, but will put meter on it tomorrow... Thanks for responses so far, please keep them coming... I'll post a video when I get back to the track in the morning... Cheers, Bob
Got to bump this every hour or so... Sorry but really need to get some advice so I know what to try tomorrow... In return free tea and coffee for all forum members at our garage should we manage to fix it for No Limits Race at Donington on May 16th... Cheers, Bob
Without getting too sophisticated, eliminate the potential and generic causes - is there any kind of fuel filter that could be blocked - 'tied to revs' you say, fuel supply is also tied to revs - sounds like something restricting fuel flow - have you checked the old favourite of blocked/partially blocked tank breather? As Chris says, check fuel supply pipes are not kinked Spark plug breaking down? Plug caps on fully? Coil? Loose fuse?
power commander fitted ? remove. dodgy fuel ? empty tank and refill. there are two wee relays around the ecu, replace or check these .I think these cover the fuel pump and something else. check your grounds. have you a side stand? side stand switch.
could a coil be braking down. any other 848 1098 etc about? you can try using their parts until you find cause. reg rectifier ? sorry cant think of much else .
Thanks for replies so far... Really appreciated... Using iPhone so hard to write lengthy response... @final_edition pretty sure only the rev counter portion flickered... I'll try to get a video of the issue posted first thing... I had a loose flywheel on the 748, fault seems different... Want to try other options before I drop the oil... Crank sensor air gap?? Can you please add a bit here?? Not sure where it is and relevance of gap... Spoke to dough at competition systems; he suggested checking crank sensor but I can't find it?? Many thanks guys, much appreciated... Bob
On left hane side of engine above fwheel If fwheel is loose the crank sensor wont read it and cut engine out until the sensor picks it up again You can lay bike over on side to keep oil in Check flywheel first through insp plug If loose you will need a 30mm deep socket
The sensor is above to the right of the battery on the l/h side inserted in to the crank case. It's fecker to get at! Looks like the rear speed sensor.
i would think the flywheel issue isn't really relevant to a modern 848....more the tapered mount on the old motors, this is splined. the ign pick up is radial on the 848 motor.... Are you running a nemesis ecu?
