Using Loctite Si 5980 Gasket Sealer?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Daikinman, May 29, 2015.

  1. Hi,

I am replacing the valve cover gaskets on my 05 749. The manual states to use a Ducati gasket sealer and the other suggestion is to use Three Bond. These are all fine for me to purchase, but I currently have some Loctite SI 5980 gasket/flange sealer in my garage. Is it useable/suitable for what I need or do you suggest that I do not use this and purchase one of the previously mentioned products?

    Cheers, Dave.

  2. It looks to me that it is not suitable for the valve covers in terms of temperature.
According to this datasheet http://tds.henkel.com/tds5/docs/5980-EN.PDF , the strength of the sealant at 70C operating temperature and then drops massively around 100C. Assuming that oil/coolant can reach these temperatures easily on your ride, I don't think it's gonna work. The last thing you need is to have leaking cases or clogged passages from runny sealant.

I used to use loctite hi temp sealant, but like the threebond much more (sets better in my opinion)

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  3. The Ducati sealant is Threebond TB1215. I've used nothing that's worked as well.
