I've just been in and paid for my new Multistrada and been offered the paint protection film for £200. I can see their point about a new expensive bike needing protecting from scratches etc, but the 1200S kit from chipguard.co.uk is £91 and it looks fairly conspicuous on their video. Is this stuff worthwhile for keeping the paintwork nice come trade-in time, or is £91 (or £200) too much for cling film? Thanks.
My experience is that it does a job, but in time starts to look naff as it ages and then benefits someone else when you flog it.
£91 sounds a fair price, but if you haven't fitted it before, be prepared for a day of frustration. My mate had his new GSA done for £120 fitted, but there are less panels. I did my own and you can see it, but it does stop the big stone chips.
When I got my new bike last September I got venture shield fitted. You can buy kits but its not easy stuff to put on, so I elected to have mine fitted. Is it worth it ? Well I think so. First it protects the tank so no need for ugly tank protectors, and apart from the paint mine also covered the headlights. So far the only paint chips I have are on the wheels, so it must be working.
Well worth It imo. I fitted the kit to my last mts, and again to the current one. Yes it can be fiddly, especially as you have to stretch a couple of them to fit the contours, but if it's not going right just wet it again as you peel it off, and have another go. It stopped my last mts from a number of stone chips. The screen got cracked but the paint always looked great. I heard people in the past saying the edges collect dirt, well they can do, but a soft toothbrush and soapy water gets this off, and IMO shouldn't happen because the edges shouldn't hang over / lift. Personally I fit it to keep the bike looking tidy while I have it
I've fitted a full kit on mine but it's very fiddly took me 4 hours and it's still not perfect yet but it's all on and protecting
Aye. They have a bloke coming in to do a number of bikes, and for £200 he'll do mine. I'm thinking more along the DIY line to be honest. I don't mind, and am quite good at fiddly jobs like this, so £91 tastes a lot better than £200. I can see the benefit, but it does only pay off when the bike is sold or traded in. The next owner gets the cherry paintwork while I've had a condomised bike until then.
So if you want "cherry paintwork" don't have it done then. It's not rocket science And you've saved £91
Properly fitted it should be barely noticeable. I've had this on various bikes and it certainly works. My new PP MTS had this and it means I'm relaxed about the odd rub or scuff as it's just on the film. On mine the film has the odd crease over a complex curve like the trailing edge of the tank which is being redone FOC. Effectively you are paying about £100 labour to fit and if done well, it's a diddly job so this price isn't excessive. The benefit of having it done at the dealer is I now have some comeback on the odd niggle and it will be perfect, that's worth the professional install price.
Thanks El Toro and Count. I think you've persuaded me to get them to do it. As you say, it's £100 for labour for someone to do it properly, and I'll have the come-back for anything that's off about the job. I'd probably cock up one little bit, but that's the part I'd notice every time I saw my bike and it would drive me nuts. I'm gonna do it. Cheers to everyone who replied.
