Gonna be a sad 2015,as it has been confirmed....that beautiful bomber will be flying for the last time this year. Seen her many times at airshows, the last one being Waddington 2014,never failed to give goosebumps and a huge grin when she went skywards.Hope I get to see her this year, what a damned shame!!
To people of a certain generation this is very bad news... Vulcan To The Sky - The Vulcan '558 Lottery
Do they still have the one parked at Southend Airport? It was there a few years ago that I lived near there and they used to use it in the air shows but I'm an East Sussex man now.
Was well impressed when one crashed within 200 yards of our house. Used to go and pick bits of it up for weeks afterwards
When I first started riding I used to ride to Scampton and watch them doing circuits and bumps. Used to stand on a side road next to the landing lights and they came in straight over the top of me As a kid they were a common sight coming and going it's not till they have gone that you appreciate and then miss it
Last year, during the Crimea crisis, I was at my Dad's house watching the news. He leaned over to me and said: "If I'd done my job properly, none of this would be happening now...my target was Sevastopol!" (He was a navigator on the better V Bomber...) I'm glad he never got called to do his job "properly"!!
If god stops being a bumhole and gives me my euro millions win this year, she'll keep flying - I'll make sure of that
A long time ago I bought a vhs tape it was the Vulcans last day as part of the RAF Vulcan display team it took off from Waddington on a wet morning. I used the video on pause as reference to do a painting of it
Proper "Boys' Own" adventure story - if you didn't know it was true it would seem too far-fetched... The bomb craters are still visible, if you know where to look (and can be seen on Google Earth)...
Yep, saw the documentary on the Stanley raid again a month or so ago. When you see how close the whole raid came to being a disaster, you really marvel at the skill of the crews and that proper "let's carry on whatever" attitude. It will be a very sad day when we can't stand in awe of a Vulcan flying over our heads.
The whole point of the Black Buck raids was to say "we can bomb something 8000 miles away, and your capital city is only 7000 miles away..." And it definitely worked.
it kept the argy air force on the main land to protect the cities and as a result they didn't have much airtime over the islands....so the raid may have won the war.
You may find that the crews of COVENTRY, SHEFFIELD, ATLANTIC CONVEYOR, ARDENT, ANTELOPE, SIR GALAHAD, SIR TRISTRAM, LCU F4, GLASGOW, ANTRIM and several others disagree with that statement. The limited time over the islands was due to the Argentinian aircraft operating at their maximum range. But they did a good deal of damage whilst they were there... Their pilots are widely acknowledged to have been skilled, and brave...
Be a Shame but it's been running on donations for years. If it comes into Birmingham I should have space in the car for one to be right at the end of the runway. Fly bys aren't as ground trembling as take off but I've still got access to the aerospace company based right at runways end so it's hard to get closer.
I think the statement "didn't have much air time " should have been " had lesser air time "........im quite aware of the sacrifice made by many men from all the services inc the Argentinian services and the contribution made towards victory by all BUT I was commenting solely as the op was talking about the Vulcan bomber about the part played by the Vulcan and nothing else. im really shocked that someone would nit pick my statement to make out I didn't have any respect or knowledge of what went on in this conflict. I will comment no further on this subject. many thanks......stephen
