Wales Tour

  1. Planning a relaxed 3 day trip to take in some of the sights of wales, has anyone got any suggestions on where to stay/stop or any roads that can't be missed? aiming to do around 250-300 miles a day tops, heading over via the cotswolds.

  2. To name just a few
A4112 The Bala road there is also a little cracker from B4391than runs across to Ffestiniog
    A483 Newtown to Crossgates

To be fair the whole of Wales is just heaven on bike

  3. I can recommend here as somewhere bike friendly to stay although the car park has a slightly challenging slope - the reservoir up the road is beautiful to -

    Royal Oak Rhandirmwyn
    welcome

Keep an eye out for movable speed cameras in the 30's and 40's

Just go with the flow as MrC said there are not many bad roads just ones with more police presence

  4. I have to be honest in all the years I have been riding in Wales the Police presence is very low. Of the half a dozen times I have been this year I cant recall seeing any. Pretty much always see the camera van but the lovely people of Wales give you plenty of notice

  5. Agree with all. very few bad roads in Wales and the whole of the A470 is probably better than most roads in England. The obvious places are Snowdonia and Bala. If you find yourself around Brecon, the Ponsticill road is pretty, but slow and I seem to remember the road to Hirwaun as being a pleasant run but short. Llanidloes to Machynlleth is nice, then you can take in Aberdovey and Tal-y-Llyn (for the scenery rather than the ride). Can be busy in the summer. Lot of people get off the M48 at Chepstow for the A466 to Monmouth, but the traffic at the end can be offputting.

I've stayed a couple of time at the Cross Foxes near Dolgellau. Nice pub with good food, good rooms. Car park is in open view of the road if you are security conscious, but I haven't lost one yet.

  6. Harrys Hotel in Aberystwyth is good. Parked my bike in the beer garden. Comfortable double room with large full english £75.

  7. Be doing a bit more of this myself too :)

  8. Rhyader is a good little town to stay, popular stop over and base for lots of different motor sports folk, plenty of pubs.

From there the road up through Élan valley to Devils Bridge is a bit different. The A44 back the other way has some of the best sweepers.

Followed an unmarked police rider on a dark coloured Z1000SX through Bala earlier this year. Was fun trying to keep up with him!

  9. Rhayader also has an awesome cake shop :) but the hotels book up quick and we've always left it too late !

  10. We were aiming to stay in Crickhowell but were exhausted after a full day zig zagging our way down, had never heard of Rhyader. We got in at the Crown and then found lots of muddy folk on dirt bikes, a caterham owners club meet and numerous bikers about the place. Then a night rally started from the car park next to the Crown.

Went up the Élan valley by accident too when we left town on the wrong road. So much more fun without satnav!

  11. Some great suggestions guys thanks, I'm planning to do a route today so i'll put it up for feedback, then hopefully follow it up in 3 weeks once we've ridden it!

  12. Hereford to Crossgates is a nice run there are some lovely hairpins along the way.
Élan valley is beautiful some fantastic scenery and some twisty almost single track road in stages
Then the run to Ruthin is fab too the horse shoe pass at the top and the ponderosa cafe then onto Ruthin
Abergavenny to up to Merthyr and all around that area
    Crickhowell and around that way
Even hereford to hay-on-wye and further
The worlds your oyster and I think you have some choosing to do a bit like deciding which chocolate you will have out of the box then trying another because they are so nice

Have seen the police tucked up in someone's driveway from Crossgates to Rhayder as it's a fairly fast road as my last riding buddy will tell you on his zx10r
So just kept your eyes open that's the only time I have seen police around

  13. I'd keep a very careful eye open for Plod after the carnage last weekend down here.

If you want to go a bit quick it's probably better to do it north of Brecon and south of Dolgellau.

  14. Booked a 2 night stay in Aberystwyth, as most places didn't seem keen for us to have only a one night stay or were booked up as we have left it so late. will now replan my route I did earlier based on having a fairly central base camp to drop luggage off at. Will likely be keeping close to the speedlimits, my mate is happy plodding along and my Hyperstrada isn't the best at top end speeds anyway.

  16. In that case might I recommend the Abergwesyn mountain road out of Tregaron, ending at Beulah. Then cross country down to Brecon via Upper and Lower Chapels, take a right down the A40 to Carmarthen and the A484/B4333 to Cardigan and then back up the coast back to Aber'.

Also the Mountain road from Rhyader to Aber ......

Didn't notice you were on a Multistrada ..... ideal bike for Welsh backroads as well as the faster stuff. I'm actually quite jealous.

If you get bored Cardiff is worth a day wandering around.

Hope you have a nice time, wherever.

  17. I found a nice military road when Inwas out llandovery way at the weekend. Up over a great elevated spot, much single lane but good visibility and lots of sheep!

  18. We had 2 nights in Aber last month just before school hols started. Did the steam train to Devils Bridge where theres a waterfall and pub. 1hr each way with 1hr.15min turnaround, twice a day.

  19. Hyper not multi strada ;) but yes it should be perfect for the roads, my mate will be on his 600 hornet.

Not had time to amend my route as yet, previously we had planned to do two seperate routes but i've looked at all the roads on here and as said above i'm a bit spoilt for choice, pretty sure any of these roads will be great!

  20. The Eppynt road, that's bloody brill,is the mock-up village still there?
