1200 Warning Mts1200 Owners - Check Your Brake Lines

  1. I was checking over the bike this week and I found this [IMG]

It's the crossover line from the left to right front calipers that is routed beneath the front mudguard and located in a channel in the black rear section. Both sides were worn similarly - nearly through the braiding!
I had heard of this happening on other's bikes but the last time I checked, last winter, it was fine with no signs of abrasion. Just as well I looked now. Another line is on order and I'll take preventative action to stop this ever happening again.

If you own a 1200 Multistrada have a look at the crossover line on both sides, just where it goes under the edge of the red section of the mudguard.

  4. Hi Derek,
I posted about this back in December, and had the hose on my last bike changed under warranty, so I would expect them to do the same for you.

On my new bike the hose replaced with a Venhill to work with the Monoblocs has a pair of rubber blocks which will hopefully help this happening again.

It is also worth having a look at the metal pipes within the plastic housing under the seat, as they rub against each other.
Finally, check the hose that goes to the rear shock to make sure the plastic underseat tray is not wearing a slot in it.

    Cheers,
    John.

  5. I knew there was a previous post John but a search didn't find it. No harm in bringing it up again on such a serious matter.
My bike is long out of warranty and I'm not going to attempt to get a goodwill out of them. I have ordered a replacement from Venhill for £30. I will however draw this to the attention of my Dealer and if I can Ducati UK as, given the potential for a life threating failure, I think this really should be a recall issue. I will check the metal pipes but my bike isn't an 'S' model so no hose to the rear shock.

  6. The photo link's dead @Derek ;-)

  7. Hopefully sorted now, I don't know what happened to it.
I just took delivery of a Venhill brake line this morning that I'll be fitting today. It comes with 2 rubber sleeves that I'll position either side to prevent contact with the mudguard.

  8. Update. The Venhill hose is fitted with the rubber buffers in place, the system is bled and working, can get out on the bike again with no worries about the brakes failing suddenly. :)

For any one else replacing this line; I fitted one at 425mm (they come in 25mm increments) and although it fits and everything clears the tyre it would have been better to use a 450mm line. Getting the 2 screws that hold the two mudguard sections together back in place would have been much easier and the rear of the mudguard would probably be held slightly further from the tyre (I have a Pyramid extender fitted).

  9. Derek, I got dejavu reading that last paragraph. It seems very similar to what I wrote a year or so back, albeit for the hose on monoblocs ;):)
    Glad you've got it sorted.:upyeah:

  10. Checked mine...all ok 32K miles on a 2010 plate (S model, Ohlins etc).
