Ok, not till the 20th....but the roads were finally dry today so thought I'd get the covers off and go for first ride of the year. Gave the bike a quick check over and got ready to start her up, flick the slider and she starts all by herself...... Doh!! The dreaded start switch problem (button stuck in) I've seen so many posts about, only 2,000mls and 6months old, thought dodgy Italian electrics was supposed to be a thing of the past. Tried some WD40.... slight improvement but still didn't feel too good, so decided to open the switch up and get some silicone grease in there. Once the 2 halves are open there's a metal plate holding the spring behind the button, 1 screw and that comes away to give access the spring and button. ..........So here comes the WARNING! In my haste to get out for a ride I didn't notice the VERY small spring and contact on the side of the push button.......... which promptly sprang across the garage. So, if you don't want to spend an hour or so crawling around the garage floor on your hands and knees, use more caution than I did!! Suitably lubricated the switch is back together and seems to be working fine again now, but the ride out ended up being a little shorter than planned. Does anybody know if there has been any update to the switch recently? I need to get the bike in to the dealer for the Skyhook sensor recall when(if) the weather gets more reliable, and wondering whether to get the switch changed at the same time. Might be a pointless exercise as they obviously come un-lubricated when new.
Col, if your bike is a skyhook then it has the updated switch. It was updated in 2012 from the earlier type, and I don't think there is any further update since.
Hi John, Thanks for the info. I'll see what the dealer suggests when I take it in, if I get a new switch think I'll put some grease in there anyway.
Not shure about the internals, but the RH switch on the Skyhook bikes, has a wider kill/ignition slider.
powerful rare earth gaffer taped magnet on a stick. remember this tip. will find stuff easily with no bending over.
Good point bootsam, probably would have helped find the spring (looked stainless, but probably still magnetic enough), still would have been on my knees for the brass contact though. Bit of pain and grovelling never hurt anyone ...might remember not to be so bloody stupid next time.
