Warranty Issues & Upgrades - Confused???

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Hinchy70, May 17, 2012.

  1. I've had my MTS1200s a couple of months now and I'm getting a little more concerned the more I pick up on threads regarding upgrades / recalls etc etc i.e the rear brake and the engine stop switch? As a relatively new MTS owner, please can somebody post me what they know to be a complete list of what the upgrades should be and if they are dealer warranty jobs (f.o.c) or not. I would really appreciate this. I have a May 2011 registered bike, now 12-mths old.

Ps - what a great forum for this kind of issue - thanks Chaps.

  2. Hinchy70, Forums like this are great but you do hear about all the issues people have had & assume they are going to happen to your bike. The old Ducatista site did get quite negative & a number of owners dropped off.

The new 2010 Multistrada was & still is quite an advanced piece of technology but with that often can come teething problems. Most of these were identified & addressed with early 2010 owners like me. What we don't know is when these modifications filtered through to the production line.

The only "official" re-call was related to the engine possibly cutting out which was covered by an ecu upgrade I believe. The well documented rear brake not working has been managed on a "by request" basis where the master cylinder & brake line is replaced. There have also been ecu upgrades connected to the surging @ 3,000 rpm area, some bikes that had problems with the RH handlebar switch which was replaced, a few bikes that had radiator & dash issues but I'm not aware that these were re-calls.

The rule is if your bike is OK don't worry about it but if you suspect a problem then at least you know where to look & what to look for. Try to ignore what other people are having problems with, sit back, relax & enjoy a truely brilliant bike. Go on to any forum & you will always here about what's not so good but I would say that this site so far has been a lot more positive.

  3. Best and easiest way is to go to your dealer and run the VIN thru the system and check. Not all bulletins/recalls are applicable to all bikes. It should also show which have been done or need doing.

  4. just to add re. kill switch - it happened on my bike and I had a new one fitted, basically water ingress damage can make ur bike cut off.

you wont know it needs doing and you probably cant get it replaced if your bike is newer than 2010 (because it got updated and you should have got a newer part fitted on the later bikes) and you havent had such problems but worth knowing if it does happen.

the symptons are that you are riding along nicely at 50-70 etc...(without changing gear or anything) and the engine will switch off - quite unerving but once it happens and it happens again (it got worse in my case) you need to replace the switch - good to know but nothing to worry about unless you are paranoid and insist your dealer gets it done.

the two official updates was an ECU update - abs and mixture - should be done under your service or again your new bike will have them already - just make sure you ask the dealer if it has all the updates installed.

other by-request updates that I have done are : back brake (and you need to ask for the complete kit - not just a bleed) - unless your new bike has it already...and the front forks are noisy on uneven surfaces - again you wouldnt notice this unless other users told you about and you went out and noticed the knocking but worth asking to get it done in the long term ( I am having mine done on the 15k service).

  5. Hinchy, the above replies have covered it all really, and I agree with all points raised, dont worry if its going well, do watch out for the possible faulty items listed, should all be done FOC at your dealer, and yes you will hear more negative than positive.
Just ride the bugger and enjoy it!! :upyeah:

  6. The other upgrade not mentioned yet is the additional latches added to thepanniers if you have them :upyeah:

  7. Your bike should have all the early upgrades and fixes as standard so you needn't be too concerned. One reservation to that statement is that I have seen "NEW" 1200s for sale in two dealers that were clearly no later than early 2011 - old stock. You can tell from some of the obvious changes like different centre stand on the Touring. To be safe - do the VIN No check as mentioned earlier.
