So, Mark Webber (the Australian David Coulthard) "is to quit Formula 1 to concentrate on racing sportscars for Porsche". Question is, did he jump or was he pushed? And who's taking bets on Kimi being in that seat next year?
Jumped before he was pushed. Kimi is still one of the best racers, would give Vettel a good run and not take any crap.
It's quite hard to like Mark Webber. A curmudgeonly sort of bloke. About as cheerful as a foggy November Sunday afternoon. Mind you, I'm beginning to dislike Vettel too. I don't even like the smarmy team boss. He must have been pushed. Anything after F1 is a step down for those guys.
I think you have webber and vettel mixed up lol vettel is an arrogant arse and very german. webber is straight talking
I have to agree, Mark webber has always seemed like a very decent bloke to me and if I was him I'd of left formula one due to being in a team like Redbull which blatently favours that slimey little twat Vettel. The fact that its hardly real racing anymore would probably have a lot to do with it as well. lets face it, he's a multi millionaire , will never have to work again will he? so his choices are stay in formula one and continue the precession driving on shite tyres with shite rules and regs which dumbs down any real racing or take up a decent offer to go and do something different. I'd expect the Porsche racing will be more fun and he'll still get a good cheque. i don't really buy this whole 'pinnacle' of the sport thing any longer because even most of the drivers can't just race like they want, most of them seem depressed about it as well whenever you hear them interviewed. The best thing that can happen with formula one is that the whole thing goes tits up and BernI Ecclestone finally gets banged up for bribery and tax evasion. The factories can then break away and start a new series where they actually race balls out from start to finish, I know that's what I'd like to see because I have no interest what so ever about saving fuel or tyre conservation.
Absolutley right, a gentleman, but ultimately not ruthless enough and at the end of day not quite fast enough, he'll do well on the Sportscar/ LeMans series circuit, he'll be bigger fish in a smaller pond.
If you think F1 has become all about preserving the tyres and managing the fuel consumption, then what do you think Endurance Sportscar racing is all about? My prediction is that Webber will disappear into the midfield of ALMS / GT Racing and never be heard of again... He's never had the right mind-set or, to be honest, the outright driving talent to be anything more than a good number two driver in F1 - which is why I compared him to Coulthard. I think I am right in saying that he has won eight Grand Prix in his whole career - in a car that has won three world championships. You may say Vettel is smug, swarmy, arrogant etc - but surely he has a right to be? He is the youngest world champion ever...
I think Webber say the writing on the wall at the end of last season. He has to know that Vettle, a triple world champ was always going to be the number one driver. In that respect, he should know his place in the team. He was the support driver. Massa is a perfect example of this, not the fastest, but a real team player, which is how he saved his seat. I like Webber, have done for years. Personally I think the opportunity to join the Porsche GT team is one well worth taking, so its a good career move. Just look at what Derek Bell achieved
Sportscar racing - be it ALMS / GT's / Endurance, whatever - is great, and I'm a big fan of the sport. But Porsche are not exactly Audi or Toyota... These days they are a team at the sort of level that Lotus are at in F1...
