848 Well I Found Out Something Today

  1. Thought i would fit a nice 41 tooth Renthal to my 848 ready for the Spanish mountains come Sept. Easy right...........WRONG.

On the stock chain my worn tire just misses the swinger but it obvious a new one won't and I will need new tyres before I go. So I have to either fit a longer chain or go back to a 40. As the chain is a nearly new nice DID jobby, back to 40 it is.

If anyone wants a 41 tooth Renthal with 0 miles (just mounted) then let me know. Or I will frame it and mount it on the wall as engineering art.

  2. Eh?! Shouldnt affect it at all

  3. Bigger sprocket, shortens wheelbase (by 8mm in this case) = tyre center touches swingarm.

Impossible to increase the sprocket sizes and not affect the wheelbase assuming the chain remains the same length.

  4. Never heard of that. Have changed all sorts of gearing, front down 1 and rear up 2 or 3 and never an issue. Only chain change has been its too long to short, not because anything fouls.

Only issues I've seen if hitting the hugger if the eccentic is at the wrong clock face. You're running a 180tyre right? Have you spun the adjuster the right way? Ie 12 thru to 6 oclock not 6 thru to 12?

  5. It's a 55 profile 180. As it's worn a bit it doesn't touch but a new one will. There isn't enough chain length to move the wheel any further back. The highest part of the profile touches the swinger below the link rod. Not sure what position the eccentric adjuster is at currently, will have to check.

  6. I'm thinking back...and sure i had similAr issue but because I wound it past the 6 oclock towards 7 rather than the other way.

  7. Deffo no go Bradders.

Eccentric at about 6 o'clock using the oem sprocket going to about 7 with a 40 and 8 with a 41 (with a tight chain.) Even with the oem sprocket the tyre isn't a million miles from the swinger.

Looking into it seems that it is confirmed not to fit by others with a stock chain and new tyre at least for an 848. You have to go to a 100 link chain and move the stop pin to allow more rotation of the adjuster to get it tight.

  8. Try it at 1 or 2 oclock, ie opposite to the 7 or 8, and I *think* the eccentric should always be on the rhs of the face, never left

Andyb knows his stuff on this, as does crankerv2, drop them a pm

  9. I would be seriously worried if it was this close as when your at large speeds the diameter of the tyre will increase due to centrifugal forces.is your chain to short????

  10. Remember Barry Sheene's accident

  11. I agree hence using a 40 tooth sprocket. Will save the 41 till it's new chain time and then go 100 link.
