As above...I had to work from home yesterday and also it being dry I took my " lunch break" and though I'd nip out while there was a break in the weather....I'm in Bristol and so are they so I thought I'd go and see them. Main reason was as I'm still sourcing parts for the KTM supermoto conversion I'm doing. This particular job was for the 2x m12 bolts that hold the shock ( about 2 1/2 inches long)....the remit for it is not lightness or performance but resistance to the elements. After reading the fast bikes piece on Facebook one of their selling points was "we can make a one off of anything" so I thought I'd ask. I handed him the bolt and before I could even finish a sentence he held the bolt up in front of me, stated the hourly rate of the CNC machines and them proceeded to tell me that each bolt would cost about 180 quid each. In his defence he did say if the end ( bolt end ) was a different then that would make it cheaper to which I said the end could be Allen or bolt, didn't matter. He also said that if he could make tag the bolt onto the end of another run then that would make it cheaper also. This post wasn't a complaint just more an observation.... The article didn't obviously mention any prices, but the jist of the advert made it sound like they were trying to break into selling to joe public....I made a phone call a couple of weeks ago is described the part....he gave me a rough estimate of about 80 quid out of titanium which I could have stomached but stainless would do.... Let's see what happens when the price comes back.....as I say not a complaint.... Just a little surprised but then again I should have expected it...it would be nice to get them made out of stainless at least...I am expecting to pay a premium for a custom bolt but I don't know if I want to pay that much of a premium!....I might be pleasantly surprised...hope I am.
I've had similar experiences. I just happened to pop into a local stainless bolt manufacturer looking for a few parts and they couldn't have been more helpful. They didn't make me stick to the rules of 'no less than 10 of each line and no spend less that £15' and instead sorted me with 4 large hex bolts for my foot Pegs and 6 smaller ones. It was right at the end of their day and the lady there said "just give me a fiver for the biscuit tin"! I couldn't have been happier even though they could have charged me a fortune I'm sure
4x Titanium M12 x 1.25 x 70mm Fine Cone Allen Socket Head Bolts Light Weight | eBay what s unique about the bolt you require? Do they need to be in that wanky blue or red that fits kawasakis.....
I wasn't expecting any favours and I know titanium is expensive but I though 180 was a bit much especially when if im paying for time on a CNC then the second would /should be cheaper...here's the bolt...
The usual bloke I go to see is exactly as above.....I went there with a carrier bag full of assorted pig iron and he went through the lot and gave me the stainless equivalents....went to see him yesterday for some more stuff and he's just flogged his old bandit 600 and got an mt03 which he's really pleased with....we always have a natter when I go there...
Yeah I though that but then I went to the usual bloke I see he put a regular not on the end...mind you that looks pretty close....I might call them on Monday...shaft is 55mm
HEX FLANGE - SCREWS - Product List - Altiplas Specialists In Aluminium Titanium and Nylon Fasteners I'm sure there will be places that stock M12 Ti bolts - like this link. Your bolt is odd as the thread is so short. These people on the link stock in 5 mm increments up to 100mm, then in 10mm increments after that, just buy a longer bolt with the correct bare shank length and cut the excess thread off. Or ask them to do it. You need to get into the industrial sector suppliers. I was quoted £45 per metre for my T45 tube and got it for £12.00 / metre shopping around. I would think about £10 per bolt would be about right...
@comfysofa £180!!!!!!!!!!! He must be out of his fucking mind! I am positive Pete would be able to make that bolt for under £30 - handmade in Titanium - his work is awesome! Send him an email: Titanium motorcycle parts | Ti64
Is yours standard Metric Course? It looks like it in the picture - 1.75mmm pitch? You can get 1.5 / 1.25 and 1.0 which are all classed as fine. Try engineering places like I linked to first - I'm sure you'll get them for a tenner or less with a bit of internet trawling, get the shank length correct and cut the thread as required
Yeah...I'll see what they come up with...I hope I'm pleasantly surprised but I think....maybe I should have looked around more....I just assumed due to the shape and the thread only being on the end it would be a custom...
Not if you cut a longer one down ;-) what is the pitch out of interest, you don't often get Metric Course on bikes?
Well...that was another though....just going in the garage now to see if I can find a.n.other bolt to see if that fits regardless of length...
I think - so the bloke at the local stainless place tells me - that sprocket carriers, are the ones to look out for - the pinch bolts on the back of the hyper are as well...thought I had another bolt but didn't...the excess thread doesn't matter too much as theres nothing on the other side - very simple, bolt goes through the frame top and bottom of the shock and out the other side - nothing on the other side though - well not that I know of but then, ive not started putting it back together yet!...stuck....cos I haven't got a couple of bolts...
Ha - whaddaya know....the pinch bolts on the back of the hyper are 55mm, m12, and have the alternative thread....at work at the moment but ill try when I get home...
Nope...pinch bolts didn't quite fit....thread was wrong, length and diameter were right....so it is a "regular" thread as a pose to the finer type of thread....For the price I reckon the 60's will do... Just to add what pitch is the finer ? And what is the coarser....what I would call the regular thread? Just so when I order from pro bolt I get the right one....
