999 What 12k Does To A Bike Through Winter

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by The iron Duke, May 1, 2015.

  1. Morning gents.

Well all parts here to start the sprag rebuild etc. thought I'd take the opportunity to overhaul the bike while I had 2 weeks to myself.

She's had a hard winter and unfortunately had to stay outside the whole time due to being located in London with no garage. 12k nearly done in 5months so she did me proud.

Unfortunately due to work commitments she was little neglected and it's time to put that right.

Thought I would just upload some pics to show that these machines really don't like wet weather.
Clutch plates are shot aswell as all the engine casings losing pretty much all of the paint. (Shock ) cosmetic really however please see pics to show what british salty roads do . I yet to see worse plates than these.

I'm ashamed to say I have let our fraternity down on this one! Time to show the bike the attention it deserves.

Closed clutch cover me thinks this winter !!

  2. Strewth! That clutch is bad.

My engine casings are pretty bad too, flaking paint, bubbles etc. as you said, caused by the rain and salt. Are you going to get the casings repainted?

  3. Christ! If I lived slightly closer I'd let you share my garage over winter. That's ridiculous. Can you not get one of those £500 bike sheds?

  4. Your right pal. Had to go away abroad for 6weeks and this is the outcome. My own fault really.
Went away thinking it would be a week And ended up being 6 through feb!! You live an d learn as they say. Didn't think twice about the clutch to be fair! Always had a garage to fall back on.
Major school boy error on my part. However upside to the whole thing is now back in Cheshire with my lovely warm dining room . And an excuse to really purge the bike and get her cleaned up.

Engine casings were expected as I use her daily and washing every morning at 5am after night work doesn't really go. Thinking I may give a paint coat in few months but it's only cosmetic. I would say with nearly 30k on the clock she's done me proud. Only issue so far is the sprag , everything else is going well (touch wood). She has been a credit to the name she bares !!

I mainly posted this to serve as a warning to anyone considering not showing the Red Lady the tlc they deserve.

I hold my head in shame . Never again will I leave the supermodel stood in the rain!!!

  7. its the power band I worry about.................seriously though....feck!

  8. I know man! Seriously didn't think to protect the clutch . Better spending hard earned cash on the ride than on the missus'a bloody horses though so not all bad ;)

  9. The price we pay for a lapse in judgement . Hopefully I will be the last but I somehow don't think i will be.

These plates are well shot but ancillaries aren't too bad, just a quick gentle sandblast should bring them back up.

Cheers for the advice and support though guys , although I expected a thorough naughty boy telling off for letting the side down .

I'll keep you all posted on the results .
