What About A Moto Gp Single Make One-off Race?

  1. So here's an idea that has just occurred to me:

Wouldn't it be cool if at the end of the season, they did a Moto GP stars' single make race?
In this event, you'd choose some sort of bike and have the whole Moto GP grid do a race on it. This would provide the completely level playing field in order to see just how dominant the dominant riders really are. Would Marquez blow the field away if all his opponents had the same bike, or would someone like Redding suddenly reveal the extent of his talent?

You could run the thing for charity. You might even invite a couple of WSBK stars too, or a few people from the Moto2 or Moto3 classes.

This would make a really great, PR friendly event and should provide a very exciting race.
I know they have done a sort of Supermotard thing in the past, but that is a different discipline. What would be a lot more entertaining would be to have the whole MotoGP razzmatazz but for just one race on one bike.

Begs the question, of course, as to what the bike should be. Answers on a postcard.

  2. Great idea but most of the riders have contracts that wouldn't allow them to compete

  3. Be nice to see them race bog standard 600's from whatever their respective manufacturer is. Bog standard meaning oem completely. no specials.

  4. bog standard oem bikes are not equal. better to have "stock" rules as this evens out the discrepancies a bit.

why not Triumph 675's in a triple challenge type thing?? they are not a competitor to any of the riders teams so less likely to infringe contracts.

  5. No point sticking them on fast bikes, we already know what they can do on them. Stick 'em all on Ninja 300's and stand well back. All the gp class riders on the grid at the same time...

  6. MVs would be good, or Triumphs indeed. Or even Aprilia RSV4's.

You want to give them enough power to keep them interested (and interesting).

  7. small bikes on a nadgery circuit
    Mopeds?

Actually, a top-gear challenge. Give them all £100 and thy have to race what they have bought...

  8. Its called Moto2

  9. Sure, but even then it's not a one-bike series, it's a one-engined series.

My point was that putting all the people who have graduated from Moto2 (so the best riders in theory) to return for a one-off race on the same bike would be interesting and a great spectacle.

  10. Oh I agree it would be great. A sort of race of champions for bikes. Take the top two riders from a chunk of race series and see just how good they are. Shame Kerry Packer died in 2005

  11. I think this would make for fantastic racing and I would pay good money to see this. I think they might of done something like this back in the 80's with the elsie's or even more recently with the R6 cup. Im sure the mighty Honda could throw three dozen of there new cbr500's at this. It would make for cheap racing and surely push the sale of these bikes through the roof. It could be written into the riders contract at the beginning of the session that there is no testing and the keys are pulled out of a hat for each rider. All bikes should be kept in standard form without any special parts being added. Can you imagine the red mist behind every riders visor? Oh and it should all take place at Cadwell !!

  12. The only way there can ever be a true world champion on bikes or in cars is if all the riders/drivers have exactly the same kit at each round, handed out randomly, all they would be allowed to do would be able to sort their own set-up to suit their preferences, just as the R6 cup was. As it is moto gp and F1 are manufacturers titles, nothing more.

  13. I'd love to see the above (R6) style racing, with the top 3 or 4 riders from SBK, AMA, Moto GP etc racing; but each year a different manufacturer could supply the machines and tyres, so ultimately there shouldn't be a one manufacturer bias.
