What Glorious Machine!

  1. Well after years of wanting an SS ever since I was a 17 year old admiring an SL in a shop on London road derby (27 years!) but always buying Jap 4's, 2 strokes etc I finally got one, more out of curiosity than anything else, I expected to be disappointed after hearing all the stories about vibration etc, but the opposite is the case, I absolutely love it, it's got character , beauty, is light, handles beautifully, I could go on but suffice to say, I get it, I really get it!, why did none of you tell me about this before? , PS I'm already thinking how good are modern Ducatis, this could end up costing me thousands!

  2. glad to hear you like it, stick with it and save your £'s, newer ones are just tarts handbags (749/999 was the last real bike Ducati made) everything since then is just a marketing exercise to extract cash from the trendies.

  4. a lot of people don't get ducati's
they are a bit marmite for some people
you love them or hate them yes they are a world away from
    jap inline fours etc
but then again they are made in a different way
not on a soulless robotic assembly line
yes some bikes are better some worse but for me ......
the ss is the most fun for your money

  6. I'm thinking I might at least try a 916 though , the SS is a keeper btw, I'm thinking if I don't get a 916 now I won't be able to afford one in a few years looking at the way the prices are going!
PS just added a pic to the first posr

  10. I can't agree more, I've had mine about 5 years now. Opened up the throttle this morning, always amazing. Fantastic machine. Where did you find yours if you don't mind my asking?

  11. Stonehenge of all places!, advertised on eBay, it meant a 360 mile round trip in a van to pick it up but I'd always want to see SH and it was cheap so I went for it, looks as though I did the right thing, took it straight in for belts and clearances and the ducati specialist said it's a good one, I know what you mean about the power, on paper it shouldn't feel overly quick, but it does!

  12. excellent, nothing stands between you and your machine now. Enjoy more, parrot less...
I'm in the same boat - recently took one over - albeit neglected and needing some work on carbs, tank, forks seals, plus indicators/mirrors.

  13. Lovely aren't they? It actually took me a little while to "get" my own 750ss. I loved the look of it but regarded it as more of a posh ornament... then one day I decided to actually push the thing and it just egged me on and I discovered how well this old fossil hounds along, it's a brilliant little thing.

You're lucky, you're ticking a lot of boxes!

    What a peach!

Modern ones are just fine too, really nice to ride but they've lost "something" in the quality along the way. the cycle parts are a bit less bespoke and although dynamically the modern ones are amazing to ride, you're onto something there with the SS. The 749/999 I agree is somehow the last of a certain era and the 748/916/996/998 period bikes have so much love poured into them that they really do feel special... the Terblanche bikes felt like the last days of something, but then the Scrambler is clearly a brilliant little hooligan too, and the Monster is ace... oh, they're all good, rather like your SS! :D

For my own curiosity, I really want to own a 851/888 Superbike... ideally one of the saucy ones, or a 900 Superlight Mk1... or I'll keep going down that slightly absurd street and get into Bimotas... I've developed a thing for Paioli forks. :D

Welcome though, and congrats on your lovely SS. If you're ever in Lincs then give us a shout, we've a red 750 and a yellow 750 and you can't beat the sound of them all hollering along together!

  14. Yes they definitely go well, in fact in a way that's a problem , I've spent the last few years training myself to slow down (most of the time!) and then i get the SS and it keeps egging me on to speed up!, "come on English, accelerare , accelerare!", it's really addictive, the torque, exhaust note, the feeling that someone has removed all friction from the machine!, I really must get my discipline back or it's going to end badly, and I really don't want to scratch such a pretty bike :), I test rode a couple of scramblers and they are great fun, the overly firm narrow seat and shocking front suspension put me off in the end, that said both of those problems can be overcome so I might have one that's been sorted because in every other way they are brilliant, PS I'm looking for a spare carby engine to rebuild for the enjoyment of the build and to act as a spare if it's ever needed so if anyone has one please let me know, cheers Mark.
