What Good Silencers Exist For A Carby 900ss ?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by chueewowee, Mar 8, 2022.

  1. I need two silencers for my 2002 900ss carby transplant.
I could go for s/h original OEM, but thought I should consider alternatives.

I dont want to spend a lot right now, just something that might serve as well as OEM.
So I ask myself, what about the reverse cone silencers that are cheaply available?

I will be running it on an open airbox lid. I have yet to order carb jets to suit my set up.

    Thanks for your interest,
    John

  2. They look more than fine. I'd have them, if good for the exhaust flow.
Probably about 21" length, unless I'm mistaken.

Do you know anything about them?

  3. If you want OEM I have one right hand one available.

  4. I think the link was to suggest a look rather than actually to use 851 Tricolore standard exhausts.
They don’t really meet with the description “reverse cone silencers that are cheaply available” as they are neither cheap nor available.

  5. I looked into this recently. Secondhand bargain is you only option by the sounds of it. If you don't want standard, it's hard to get decent aftermarket pipes for a reasonable price. Keep a search on eBay, and look on here and eventually you'll find something.
You could get reverse cone, if you think the look will be OK on this bike, I don't think I would. You'd need to sort hangers, which can sometimes hike price up too.

  6. Thanks DesmoQ. that is sound advice.
Probably s/h OEM is the best way to go, I think it's what I'll do.

  7. You can get a pair for less than £100

  9. But what look were you after ideally?

  10. Here is a pic of the one I have for sale, it's the lower of the two.

There is a thread on here DSC_0517.JPG where I showed how I resprayed the outer tube without dismantling the silencer.

  11. Away from standard you can do all sorts and make it look good - titanium, carbon, alloy, stainless, low pipes, high pipes, centre exit pipes… depends what you are doing with the bike and how much you want to spend.

  12. Thanks For your kind offer John.

I have conveniently found and won an auction for a pair of OEM silencers for 900 on ebay, that's why I delayed replying. I got them for £75 plus postage as the only bidder.

As for the question of look, I think I would like to try the megatron look. I think I could possibly use a British made pair of decent quality, with correct 1 /34" inlet , https://www.britishbikebits.com/universal-super-megaton-motorcycle-silencer-1-3-4 £70 inc each silencer, and would ideally need to adapt by making up an angled link pipe to get the correct angle at join - alltohugh there is available something of the sort at £16 ex vat for each angled adaptor, offered at rgmnorton: https://www.rgmnorton.co.uk/buy/exhaust-pipe-adaptor-to-lift-silencer-12-degrees-1-5-8_5134.htm

However for now, to start with I shall be happy with OEM, to get the bike with 900 transplant running sweet, before any trial of that kind.

  13. All I shall need now is to track down,
    - a suitable oil cooler + pipes,
    - clutch slave + pipe,
    - a single missing exhaust flange/clamp
    - a pilot jet and emulsion tube for my (600ss) carbs to suit 900.

Any help there, would of course be appreciated.

I have the necessary dual disk, fully adjustable showa ready to go in.
Meanwhile I have stripped top end and covers ready and began surface prep for painting the engine this weekend hopefully.
