I've recently returned from the 2023 EMM (European Multistrada Meet) ride in Andorra, having done circa 2100 miles. My bike performed really well, other than as I progressed on the ride, the bike started to make a very audible clicking noise when moving. No unusual noise at all from the engine and clutch mechanism, but when moving I can hear a regular clicking sound, which as speed increases and decreases, changes proportionately. Any ideas from anyone, which I appreciate is similar to asking Clouseau, based on such limited information? When I can drum up the enthusiasm, probably in a week or so, I plan to give the bike a good clean, take off the front sprocket cover, clean the sprocket, the housing area, the rear sprocket and the chain, before a thorough re-oiling. Once done, I'm going to run the engine with the bike in gear, on the centre stand, to see if I can manage to replicate this annoying sound. I appreciate that without load of any kind, I'm highly unlikely to be able to replicate the noise, however, if anyone has experienced a similar thing before and could offer any suggestions/advice, or ideas, that would be helpful. The bike, other than this hopefully minor issue of a foreign body collected on the chain within the chain oil/grease, ran brilliantly, so rather confusing to say the least!
The noise isn’t coming from the front of the bike, it sounds like it is coming from directly underneath my seating area! Also, no noise whatsoever when spinning the front wheel, or rear wheel for that matter.
It could be anything, I’d get it up on stands and rotate both wheels and have a good look around as you do, check bearings for play whilst it’s up and inspect tyres and chain.
DB, my current thinking precisely, but time will tell, when I've actually managed to remove the following of course: 1) Lollipop stick 2) Metronome 3) Edgar Allen Poe fan (s) riding pillion........
I hear exactly the same on my V-Raptor & I'm pretty sure, no I'm certain, it's coming from the front brakes. If I gently touch the brakes the noise disappears so my best guess is that it's the pads rattling around in the calipers. Either side to side hitting the piston then disc or forward/backwards in the caliper slot the pad fits into, due to a warped disc or worn buttons? Same as you there is no noise when I swpin the wheel on it's own. This could just as easily happen with the rear brake if you are hearing the noise from underneath but noises from rattles etc can be deceiving in where they appear to come from.
I had a similar noise on mt 1200 DVT. I adjusted the chain, etc, etc. Better but not perfect. I let the bike spin around in 2nd on tick-over(purposely) and noticed the chain guide moving about. I loosed everything off to get to the chain guide, which lifted fairly easily and found that by tapping it down repeatedly, it made a similar noise to what I could hear. I had some super sticky number plate mounting type pads and fitted them in place under the chainguard. This has really reduced the clatter sound. It fixed my issue, perhaps worth a try?
Do you take the wife on the back of the bike? Someone else reported an annoying noise on here the other day, I’m pretty sure that’s what it turned out to be.
