998 What Power Should We Expect From A 998 ? Is This Motor Standard ?

  1. So I've been building up a previously crash damaged 998 in to a track / show bike, based on a Troy Bayliss Replica. I have no history with the bike other than it looked like a standard bike, in black, that had had some "restoration" work done on it before it was dropped / damaged, as the clocks had been replaced with new ones and they showed 40 or so miles on them, but the bikes MOT history shows it was 40k miles previously. It also had a lot of the parts on it cleaned up and looking nice.

    Anyway, we put it on our dyno (I own a bike shop and we have our own dyno) which is usually quite pessimistic with its figures it gives, and the bike made 125hp and the rear wheel and 77 ft lbs of torque. That seems exceptionally high to me for a bike that had done 40k miles and considering the standard 998 model apparently only had 123hp at the crank, and 71.5 ft lbs of torque when brand new.

    I haven't been in to the engine to see if it is standard or not. Nor do I know for sure if it is the original engine. Is there an easy way to check what engine it is for example a standard model, S, or R ?

  2. Its a std 998 as it doesn't have the deep sump engine casings of the S. Id say the power was right probably increased with the pipes on it. if it was deep sump, better cams it would be in the region of 136..

  3. My 998 showed 114bhp at the wheel with termignonis, power commander & JHP filter kit

    If the spec sheet said they left the factory with 121 hp at the crank, then taking a 10% loss when measuring at the rear wheel that would be 109 hp. Over 20 years, and in this case apparently 40k miles (assuming its the original motor) you would inevitably see some hp had been lost. Maybe thay would bring it to say 100 hp.

    Your figures Mary Hinge are what I would expect considering you've got an exhaust, air filters, and Power Commander on.

    Mine is running standard air filters by the look of it, and a Termi standard diameter system, and just the srandard ECU, and it put outlet 125 hp at the rear wheel on our pessimistic reading dyno. I've just added a Rapid Bike Evo to the bike so I can richen then fuel mixture as it was running too lean, so going to get it back on the dyno and see what it does now..... and try work out the Rapid Bike software and how to tweak the fuel
     
  5. Never met a dyno operator or owner yet, who didn’t suggest their dyno read low…..

  6. It's generally the opposite tbh. Most like to run theirs giving optimistic high numbers as the owners of the bikes feel better about the money they've spent.

    Or the really unscrupulous ones do the initial run at not quite full throttle, or over inflate the tyres.... do the work the customer is paying for.... then let a bit of air out of the tyres for better traction and do the run at full throttle.

    But this is my own businesses dyno. We know it intimately, and are always going to do honest runs.
     
  7. Your torque figure is similar to what my 996 produced after some engine work including hi compression pistons , allowing for differences in dynos ( and bearing in mind what others have said re unscrupulous Dyno operators) the power output is not far off either
