So, Ive bought a Abus WBA 100, seems to be the one to go for. Then, for chains, seems the Almax is the one to go for. Is this the general consensus for the 'best'? Is there much of a difference between the 16 and 19mm apart from price? Is it worth getting the 19mm one? Im aware that it is only a deterant - but I dont want to be caught out by something by trying to save a few quid if it can save my bike being taken. Thanks
Have you got a good ground anchor or two to feed it through? I know not much is going to get between a scrote and your bike, but make it as awkward as possible and take as long as poss and you might have a chance of catching them in the act. Then get medieval on their asses. I'm going to put another anchor down and get a second chain for mine when I get it but I'm not going to spend a fortune on it - maybe a £50 chain and a £40 anchor.
http://www.protoolsdirect.co.uk/Abus-WBA100-Wall-Anchor-and-Ground - meant to be one of the best you can get. Sadly, no concrete floor available - so cant sink anything into the ground. This is thatchcam approved and gets good reviews.
You wont get a 19mm chain through that and may struggle with the 16mm as it says the shackle is only 16mm. Check with the chain seller before you buy.
I opted for some T keys the kind you lifts manholes with hhhhum (BT) ones, they're now obsolete as we have to use mechanical lifters, however I cut part of the key off and cemented them into reinforced mesh, This is what I used for ground anchors, have also got the adjoining door to garage locked, and alarmed, the main garage door is dead bolted, CCTV front and back of garage, and sensor flood lights Hell yes I am paranoid
Actually - the ring thickness is 20mm. The hole is a fair bit bigger, the guy gets his hand through it.
A 16mm Almax chain only just fits through the front wheel of my 900SS - you have to twist the links slightly to pull it through. No way the 19mm would fit.
Ahhh 16mm is the size of the anchor loop.:Shamefullyembarrased: Silly me. Mind you i would still check if you intend buying the 19mm chain. Its a whopping piece of kit. That bloke has weedy wrists.
I'm a fan of Pragmasis security products, they've got a bike specific website: http://securityforbikes.com/ They do a nifty pin to fit through hollow rear spindles which might be appropriate in some cases, as well as many grades of chain, ground anchors etc. It's good quality stuff from a small British company - designed by bikers too. The 16 and 19mm chains are guaranteed to be un bolt-croppable for example. Cheers.
I find most of these items a complete rip off, I bought some 2nd hand 19mm anchor chain, around 5 metres for £50-00 and some Ebay stainless steel ground anchors for like a £10-00 I sink the anchors into concrete blocks in a corner so hard to get an angle grinder on them, though they will always grind through easiest part, so try and keep bike against a wall and everything wall side, as a previous poster said make it as hard as possible, I also buy from like Lidl's, cheap Bike U locks and they are big enough to go around a tyre and loop through a chain
Steve from Pragmasis was kind enough to allow me to play with a few of his different chains, looking at lengths, sizes and methods etc. The 19mm was far too awkward to use - even just through a wheel. The 19 is perfect if you have a model that is compatible with the pin through the axle as you can use a short chain (not so heavy)but mine wasnt and had to go through the frame.
Im trying to find out if the pin goes through a Multistrada. I suspect it will but not sure. I was going to order a longer chain that if I can get the chain to be in the air only - better solution.
I think a multi is fine. Get a broom handle and if it goes through, it will fit. There is a guide to fitment on their website. Then its just down to length. Measure the inside length with the broom handle but dont forget to add the thickness of the chain and add to the length. Best speak to Steve about this with your measurements as im sure he will be happy to help.
Pin fits perfectly fine through the rear axle - have this exact setup. 390MM pin, 1 Metre chain is enough from floor anchor to the pin - if anything about 2 or 3 links too long if anything. That is all in the air nicely by putting the pin through a couple of links lower. Hmm thought I had already posted on this thread - you have a second one asking the same thing it appears which threw me
Thanks. This will be wall mounted so it could be placed at a similar height - meaning the shortest chain may do - ill try and do some basic measurements tomorrow morning before I head to work.
Ye, sorry - didnt know which area would be read, so asked in 2 locations. I checked, I suspect we can mount the Abus at the exact height of the wheel centre. The bike will have to lean over (away or towards the wall) - so dont need much in terms of length. I might give Steve a call and ask - I prefer the Almax chain offering but I like the idea of the pinch bolt.
Just spoke to Steve, sadly the pinch bolts are sold out at the length required and roughly 2 week leadtime. Ill probably get a 16mm chain and lock now with slightly longer chain which I can then use less of once the pinch bolt arrives.
