Hello to all, I have been reading for very long time but this is my first post as registered user. I am really considering changing my current R1200RT from 2011 for a MTS 1200S Touring. I know the newer model (1260S) has been released, but I do not like being an earlier adopter and it is very expensive. I have searching in German Ducati dealers and I have found several 1200S Touring from middle 2016 to Dec 2017, with kilometres from 1.150 to 12.600. I have already an appointment for this afternoon to go the dealer closest to my house, as they have a couple of them which might fit. Even thought, I will have to wait one or two weeks to test it as, today, we have -9ºC and plenty of salt on the roads. One of the bikes they have if from Sept 2016 and it has 12.600 km. The sales person said that the 1.000 km and 12.000 km inspections have been done (I understand the 12.000km inspection should have been done due to the year, not the mileage). I have some questions: What shall I pay attention to? Engine problems? Transmission issues? Rust issues? If I understand correctly, the bigger inspection when valves are checked is due to 30.000 km / 5 years. Assuming I ride around 8.000 km /year, does this mean I can wait 3 years to do the valve check? Any info would be really appreciated!
Thanks for the welcome and sorry for posting in the wrong section. I am new but the question was model specific so this is why I thought about posting it in the Multistrada section.
I’m no expert so my advice is limited to general condition. If used during winter they need ACF50 and lots of other lubricants etc. Look at the wheel spindles and front discs (they’re the only area on mine showing age), if they look mint she hasn’t seen roadsalt. Definitely get the touring pack as heated grips (although weak compared with your RT) are an essential, as is the centre stand. If you use a sat nav, consider the Genuine Ducati mount above the dash, it works really well. On a side note, having owned a R1200RT (2013 model) you are in for a treat. The added sportiness of the Mutley, the sound and the excitement are excellent trades for the slight lack of wind protection and no heated seat. My RT was quick and effortless but a bit bland. The Mutley is just amazing (I’ve got a 2017 DVT). Welcome and enjoy your chain maintenance (you’ll miss the shaft drive).
Thanks for the input Lord Farquaad. I was yesterday in dealer looking at the bike from Sep 2016 with 12600km. It is very, very good condition; perfect without any scratches, no rust anywhere, no marks on the rims or on the seat. Front tire was almost new and the back one was 50% but the sale guy said they will replace it for free. I was moving it, “simulating” a was going in and out of parking slot, and so, so light compared with my RT!! I tried the standard seat in lower position and the low seat both in URBAN and TOURING. Even thought I was reaching the floor quite ok with both I will take the low one as I was almost almost flat footed with both feet. I will order the top case as well. An I need to start thinking in protection for the engine and radiators. I am really looking forward for the weather to improve so I can try it.
I can highly recommend the Evotech radiator and oil cooler guards. Very well made, fitted easily and look OEM. https://evotech-performance.com/pro...iator-oil-guard-engine-guard-set-2015-onwards From your comments on seat height I guess your “tall like me”. At 165cm I’ve bought a Puig Touring Screen too. Offers as much height protection as the RT although it’s a lot narrower so you’ll feel it on your shoulders. Get the clear one as you will be looking through it on its highest setting. On its lowest, it’s fractionally taller than the standard on it highest. https://puig.tv/en/tuning-motos/windscreens-for-fairing-bikes/touring-screen?bike=11419
Thanks again Lord Farquaad, I have already read a lot good reviews of the Evotech products, so I will probably go with this option. Last time I measured myself (3 years ago) I was 1,68m so pretty close, yes. Regarding screens, I will try first the OEM and lets. First priority is to protect the bike and to install the GPS mount and the StraCom1 I have under the seat in the RT. Do you think there will space in the MTS to install it? I guess the space under the seat will not be enough but I do not know any other potential locations.
There’s a reasonable amount of space under the pillion seat so you might get it under that. Otherwise consider the insides of the front fairing/nose cone. It’d need to be secure but it might fit in. I found the standard screen 90% good for me to be honest. I like to ride with my chin bar up on my Shoei Neotec, and over 40mph it was too breezy. I found I had it in the upper position all the time. The Puig gives me a calm bubble of air up to Motorway speeds (80mph), which is suits me perfectly. For commuting I leave it in the lowest position to aid visibility.
Welcome along, check the exhaust valve cycles when the ignition is switched on, they regularly seize (An easy fix is available though) Check the shock bottom mount for any corrosion, as the drain holes block and water sits there. Front disks are prone to pitting at the slightest drop of rain. The OEM chains are not the best quality, so worth a look (Just replaced mine with DID ZVM-X as my last one snapped at 11000 miles, an isolated incident I think though) As said above, check the heated grips work, as they can fail. Cycle it through gears, as the gear position sensors on the back of the engine block can fail. Check the fuel gauge works as the senders can fail. Other than these, and a few niff naff things that I'll write when I remember, they are bloody good bikes..Enjoy
Thanks Lord Farquaad and Wayne, I have written down all the "hints" you have gave me and I will use it as a "checklist" when I will be back to the dealer to test the bike.
Very bad whether the last couple of weeks so I couldn´t try the motorbike until last Saturday. And, as you already know, it is an impressive machine, so quick, what a sound this is…. No rust in the front brake nor in the suspension, all recall campaigns done and heated grips working. So I just bought it straight after the test hahahaha She has the Touring package as standard and I also ordered the low seat, engine protection bars and one year additional warranty to be in the safe side. The only bad thing is I will travelling for business next two weeks so I will not be able to trade my RT and get the Multistrada until the last week of March. Thanks a lot for the support! And I will do a proper introduction in due time!
