Need to pick up my new Multi and was just wondering if I will be ok with a normal size short wheel base transit, or do I need a hightop lwb?
i can get mine in a swb renault trafic no problem by removing screen and mirrors only !!....2 min job
Ducati have the length of the bike listed at 2200mm, as far as I can see a SWB van comes in at around 2500, is that not going to be really tight? This is what the rental company have said I would get Medium Van/Commercial - (Vauxhall Vivaro Van, Short Wheelbase Ford Transit or similar) Bargain at £48 for 2 days though!
I have a Vauxhall Vivaro and have carried my 748 and my sons Honda 600RR with no problem in length and my van has a fixed headboard. Steve
You'll easily get a multi in a normal sized van -Vivaro, Transit, Vito you might have to duck on the way in when holding the bars etc
Ok I'm convinced it will fit, van is now booked, collection on the 27th/28th. The Multi is a late Christmas present, the wait until collection is going to be agonizing
I moved my Multi from Scotland to Somerset in a LWB Transit along with 2 other bikes , I reckon it would go in a standard length Transit easily though , I was reckoning on riding it up the plank into the van ! No chance ... would have been decapitated for sure ! , Its a bit of a struggle manhandling it up a plank , you,ll need two of you at least , halfway up the plank and you realise what a big tall bike it is , I had the good fortune to borrow a luton bodied Transit with a tail lift a few weeks later to shift two other bikes and that was a absolute godsend , Get your hands on one of those if you can, but I guess it might be a bit pricy to hire one
Too late now Dave, the van is booked and I'm like a small child at Christmas! I will deffo take it easy trying to get the bike in the van though!
I have a SWB Vivaro and my MTS goes in by just removing the screen. A friend has to take the mirrors off his as well - no idea why but he does. My suggestion would be to strap the rear of the bike as well as the front, I usually go around the rear grab handles. This stops the bike leaning so much (if any) around bends or bumpy roads. I also use a bump stop bike holder, but it is a pain in the arse to get the bike out of it on your own when in the van, so if you don't have one don't panic. Stupid point, but don't forget to take a suitable ramp, lifting the bike in is not easy ! A short scaffold plank works well but gets very slippy in the rain.
Make sure they are not quoting you for a Transit Connect van, much smaller than a Normal Transit, i had that done to me once.
Make sure the front wheel goes against the bulk head and if your not using a front wheel stop or similar then turn the bars and put the wheel in the corner. Use four straps and if you have then one of those RandG handlebar straps. When you load the bike in gear up the ramp then leave in gear in the van and I also tape the front brake on. I have a hitop LWB citroen relay and its great as you dont need to stoop or bend down. I always use a wheel stand/chock and the R and G handlebar strap, had three sports bikes over to Germany no problems and also get three dirt bikes when needed. Struggled with my 250 burgman though as I had to remove the top box to get it in (I also have kitchen uints at the front for storage!)
