What To Look For?

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by TBay, Aug 7, 2023.

  1. Looking at getting a 900 Monster (late 90s), or possibly a 750. I have read all the reviews etc but was wondering if the knowledgeable people on here have any key things to look out for? Any weak spots on those models? Signs of crash damage? (Beyond the obvious). Budget is reasonable so I won’t be looking at Non-runners/ projects. Well not unless a real cheap one pops up! Any extras worth paying a bit to have? Are the Sie models worth the extra?

  3. Personally I prefer the injected models -they're simply easier!

My best/ recommended (essential?) mods are an LED headlamp and a slipper clutch.

Re Sie 900's -IIRC the principal upgrade on the bikes was the aforementioned fuel injection and the Ohlins suspension. Chances are that 23 yearold suspension has seen its best years a longtime ago and would be better replaced with something new! I have Nitron & Maxton on mine.

I've known people who swear by their 750 as the best bike they've ever had. Though to all intents & purposes its a slightly lighter, (6kgs) and slower 900 which is perhaps why most of them are yellow! (early models also have one less front disc).

Classic Monsters are great bikes and I hope you find one you like soon.

    PS. Greetings!

  4. Thanks! I have to admit I lean towards carbs as I know them and can sort issues, but I guess there is so much knowledge on injection now it’s not a major worry. I missed a great looking 750 this week as was busy at work and it sold before I could get over to see it. Part of the reason for moving to a monster is that I want to shift away from out and out sports bikes so a bit less power/ speed is no major issue. Would still like a rev counter though!

  6. TBay you might want to check out the UK Monster Owners Club (UKMOC) forum. I think that Jerry on there is selling an M750 at the moment. You’ll also get lots of advice there on the various models of Monster.

  8. I saw that, sadly it’s about four hours away from me. I have some time off in a couple of weeks though so could make it down then possibly. It looks a good bike.
