Time to ditch God Save the Queen? (May be able to do it when she shuffles off this mortal coil - not that I wish her any ill).
What national anthem? What song/tune should serve as the national anthem of England (or maybe of Britain)? And why?
I don't know the answer to the question. Problem is : God Save the Queen is dire Jerusalem is all about England, not Britain, so you could have it as an English national anthem for sporting occasions (and probably should), but you can't ditch GSTQ for this in all circs. Land of Hope and Glory has references to God in it. Who needs them? Rule Britannia is a bit bellicose, seems to be about subjugation, at least in part. There was a petition to have "Gold" by Spandau Ballet. Hey, why not?
Since in the UK no anthem is prescribed by law (unlike most other countries in the world), any person, sports team or body can use whatever anthem they like. Personally I would go for Land of Hope and Glory because it's funny, and because I like the tune more. The Americans have a theme tune for the head of state (the President) quite separate from the national anthem - we could go down the same route.
Tbh like the Jocks and others we probably need our own now for sporting events not GSTQ. That should be for when Great Britain is being resprented as a whole nation. Or at non sporting events.
GTSQ is so sombre and reflects Britain as it was when it was written. We've lost an empire but also lightened up a bit since then and we also have a multi-ethnic population. Any new anthem should reflect this.
i think its a certain type who love GSTQ...sort of...Jeremy Clarksons...if you knwo what i mean..and farmers.
