What's this bolt for ? - ST4s

  1. Riding today and chain sounded ... strange.
Stopped to see oil pissing out from behind the sprocket.
Looks like the retaining washer on the sprocket had failed, allowing the sprocket to ride along the shaft towards the engine and loosened/wore away this bolt head where the oil was streaming from.
Casing threads are damaged and I can see a tiny spring in the hole.
Trying to find out what it is before I attempt a helicoil repair.
Any ideas ? Cant find it in the parts list
    thanks

  2. I have no idea but there was some mention of it and similar consequences mentioned on ducati.ms a while back. Whatever it is, it is only fitted to facelift models, 2004/05.

  3. I found the post I was referring to. You can see it here. It's reckoned it has something to do with the gearchange.
The screw is also fitted to ST3 and you can see in the ST3 parts list; item 46 on page 50.
Curiously it's not shown on the late ST4s parts list.

  4. Thanks Derek,
Fitted new bolt (filed to exactly the same length with a 1mm washer) and loctited in with a dab of silicone to be sure ! (Threads seem up to it, torqued up ok)
Refitted the sprocket, which seemed to have excessive play and probably the cause of the retainer failure, so tried a spare I had from my previous bike which had minimal play, so new one on order. Dont want that to happen again !
Lucky the sprocket headed towards the engine and not off the end of the shaft !
Does seem a bad design though. Think lesson learnt to replace the retainer with the sprocket in future.
    Thanks again,
    Stu

  5. I know this thread has been dead for some time now but i have the same problem as you had. I lost the ball spring washer and screw. I am trying to find out the length of the screw that you replaced your lost one with as can get the other parts but will have to wait some time before a new screw arrives. It has to come from Itay to Australia.
I'd like to get the bike going in the mean time.

    Thanks
    Grahame

  6. ISTR that there was a recall on my ST4s (amongst others) for the sprocket retaining plate against exactly this problem arising. I'd be surprised if any bikes remained unfixed after all this time but a few may have slipped through the net.

Edit: Found it - Recall Details for DUCATI - ST2
