Wheel / Chain Alignment

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by steveb123, Apr 8, 2023.

  1. Having got used to eccentric chain adjustment on single sided swingarms on Multistrada 1200s I'm now struggling with wheel/chain alignment on the double sided swingarm on the Multistrada V4S. I'm not confident using the notches in the rear wheel spindle adjusters to get a good alignment.

I'm looking for recommendations on the best tool / method to get the best wheel/chain alignment.

  2. The Profi tool is great. Used daily in the shop to get the adjustment spot on. Very easy to use

  6. I purchased mine from Bikermart (https://www.bikermart.co.uk). They sell four different models of the Profi Products Laser Chain Alignment tools: dot or line & magnetic / non-magnetic - search on the website for "Profi Products Laser". I went for the magnetic / line model.

  7. Just ordered one thanks @steveb123 also magnet/line one, always found the chain adjuster markings on the 899 a bit rubbish so this should be a lot more accurate :upyeah:

  8. Thanks for all the above posts. Mine arrived today.

  9. Just fitted a new back tyre to the 899 this afternoon.. FE005DCE-8ABB-42C5-ABDD-6DBBA38B7EAF.jpeg

£179 quid ! :scream::scream: !!..there’s only so much a tight northern bast can stand, be cheaper to start smoking crack cocaine soon :joy: :joy: !…anyway…
I thought it would be a good opportunity to use my new laser alignment tool that just turned up in the post this morning, absolutely tiny it is, doesn’t look like £62 quids worth, says it’s made in Germany but has a distinctly “Chinese” feel about it to me and the instructions are a bit pigeon English..” after fall down please check the tactical surface “ …meaning don’t drop it and damage it

    So I gave it a shot….
Had to close the garage door to shut the light out a bit so I could see the laser beam better, so it was a bit like a photographer’s darkroom :eyes: but it showed up okay…

A different view looking from the top..

Seemed to do the trick, but………………. I was surprised at how far it threw the chain adjusters out to get it reading correctly up the links
I know that the markings on the chain adjusters are a bit “ wank” to use a technical term, but I’m just hoping this laser is as accurate as it says it is, by the end of it the disc side chain adjuster was almost 2mm further back than the chain side  ??

Not good pics I know, so I measured the ends of the swing arm dropouts back to the chain adjuster and the disc side I’d definitely further back than the chain side, kind of makes me a bit dubious : unamused:
What’s your experience of this @nelly ? Have you seen discrepancies like this before??

  10. Have you tried using it to check front/rear wheel alignment as a backup check? Couple of bits of wood as spacers + a helper should be enough to confirm...

  11. Nope,…and not going to either, because if I trued up the chain and then got a different result with the wheel alignment that would drive me insane :sob: !

  12. It’s not very often the alignment marks are really accurate. My Profi tool doesn’t look like that one tbh.
Make sure the face of the tool is clean. Should be if it’s the first time you’ve used it. More of a problem can be the face of the sprocket. Dirt, wear or even burrs front chain wear will bugger the laser up.
I’ve no issues using mine for years. I don’t even look at the alignment marks any longer.

  13. All brand new stuff Neil, the sprocket is only a week old, think my first ride will be a steady one?
