Which Bluetooth headset for Garmin satnav?

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Dave, Aug 25, 2012.

  1. I suppose I should post this question on some touring forum but I really can't be arsed so maybe a few of you here use these things?

I've recently bought a http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f34/garmin-zumo-350lm-4003/#post53212 satnav and I'm thinking that a bluetooth headset might be an idea to enable me to hear the route instructions rather than just having to rely on watching the screen. This would probably be all that I would use it for so inter-bike comms, phone and ipod integration etc. really aren't that important to me. Comfort on the other hand, ease of use and the the ability to be able swap it easily between bikes and helmets are important to me.

    Any recommendations from experience?

  2. Interphone f2 works great F2. If you have a full face helmet you may need to get the accessory slim headphone kit though.

    Duke

  3. Interphone F4 here. Worked fine on 4 days/1700 mile Germany and back in may. Linked to phone, sat nav and talk to brother on separate bike/f4 unit. Good bike to bike up to c80mph. Slim speakers.

  4. That sounds great but I don't want to link to phone or speak to anyone - just the satnav.

I gather that the older TomTom rider satnavs had a small bluetooth receiver into which you can plug your own in-ear earphone. Does anyone know where I can get a something like that?

  5. You don't need to link it to your phone or anything you don't want, but you have the option

  6. Gotcha. I don't really like the idea of the microphone, ear-pads and all the gubbins on these full-featured headsets - all a bit redundant for me. The idea of simply having speakers in my earplugs and not having to swap anything between helmets when I wear a different one really appeals.

  7. I've had the Scala G4, then sold it because it was too complicated and it kept losing Bluetooth sync with the Zumo plus I always thought the microphones were too big and obtrusive for my Schuberth flip top. I was thinking about the new Scala G9 esp as all the reviews eemed to rave about it but a couple of reviewers said they were too complicated and when fitted to a Schuberth helmet, completely obliterated the sun visor lever! So no point going there then!

I then searched online and found these:

    UClear HBC200 - webBikeWorld

They use military spec beam forming technology to do away with the microphone completely and by all accounts work a treat! The HBC 200 has just been released in the USA and I've a ordered a set from www.cycleworld.com. If anyone is ineterested I can give an update?

  8. Looks interesting.

Where does the main unit go - in your pocket or mounted to the helmet somehow?

Can you use it with any ear-buds you want or does it have to be the ones supplied?

  9. The unit comes with a clamp or stick on mount to attach to the side of your helmet. You can then remove the unit from the mount to charge it as needed.

The ear buds on the photo are noise cancelling units that aren't available yet. Instead, It comes as standard with twin earpieces that sit in the recesses of your helmet that also double up as 'beam forming' microphones to pick up your voice when you speak.

If you go to www.uclear-digital.com you'll get the full info. They've also got an app available for the previous model, the HBC100 that shows how it mounts on the helmet, modes of operation etc.

  10. Just get a tiny Sony bluetooth receiver, then plug your own in-ear headphones or earplug headphones (that I have from ultimate ear.co.uk) into the receiver. You can get one on Amazon for about £30. Mine was excellent and worked brilliantly. But I can't be bothered now and I just look at the screen instead as it is still easy enough.

  11. I've had the top of the line Sena and U-clear in the past but now use the XUS-A Tour Interphone Cellularline Pro Sound and it's really works well. The feature I like best with the Interphone is something the others lack is the automatic reconnection so when your out of range from the other riders then rejoin them you don't have to repair with them it's automatically done. I also use their upgraded speakers and mic which are awesome
