Which Carbon?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by spanish, Mar 27, 2013.

  1. Thinking of giving my Multi a birthday present. A carbon accessory!

Thinking of replacing the front mudguard and probably the air intake fairing. Aware that these can be supplied by Ducati, Carbonworld and Ilmberger and wondered if there is any words of wisdom out there as the best supplier- especially relating to quality and cost.

I gather Ducati now produce a matt finish carbon ( for the 2013 model) so suppose one can have a choice of finishes from them - but expensive.

    interested in your thoughts

  2. Conquest has provided all mine and is top quality - you can find them under suppliers - plus a good forum discount

  3. I have used Ilemberger on my previous bike, very good but expensive. I have Ducati carbon on my Multi
as it came with it, but I have heard good things about Conquest on here.

  4. Is it Conquest in Wimborne Dorsetshire. Just tried to fond on the web and little info. And thanks

  5. Yes that's the one. They give a discount to forum members so pm them first for a discount code.

    Good luck with your mods.

  6. I've already have some carbon parts from CarbonWorld.de (10% discount code ;-)and cdt-r.com (Carbon Design Team dealers) in addition to DP carbon parts - happy with the quality of the products and the match for the OE stuff.
Kinda got the carbon bug now, never thought I'd be one for adding carbon bits but this affliction has taken hold! lol
Been looking at getting carbon front fairing quarter panels, not many places you can get these for some reason - talked to Steve at Conquest Carbon, liked what he had to say and would have ordered from him except the manufacture/delivery time didn't work for me.
Following a bit more research I contacted Nigel at Sandbar Composites (Uk distributor for Ilmberger Carbon) -
    http://www.sandbarcomposites.co.uk
...talked to him at length, an education in some ways as he enlightened me to the pros and cons and techy stuff related to different manufacturing.
He's a very straight talking kind of guy, tells it how it is! My impression is that Ilmberger carbon products tend to be a bit more expensive due to the superior quality of the parts and their close association with bike manufacturers such as Ducati (and in fact have/do design/make parts for manufacturers at times).
I'll feedback soon when the fairing panels arrive.

  7. I really like the satin finish on the 2013 PP version - is that available anywhere??

  8. I think Conquest do it

  9. Do not, under any circumstances, order the cheap chinese stuff on Ebay...
    Photo's to follow....
The arms on the rear fender (rear mudguard, that hangs off the hub) look like they were finished in the dark with a butter knife.
You can see these when it's on the bike. 1-2mm holes everywhere in the gloss finish. Really nasty.
And I got stuck with a £26 customs charge. Took four weeks to arrive...very disappointed.
Ebay say I can send them back for a refund, less the postage out.

  10. I've decided not to go the CF route. I'm buying original parts from scrappies when they become available and having them carbon dipped. That way I have a set of original plastic to put back on the bike when I sell and a set of dipped to flog later. Far, far cheaper option. I'm not worried about the weight, I'm nearly 18st FFS so a few grams makes no difference to my bike at all.

  12. What is the rough cost for Dipping and how real does it look?

  13. For the hugger, chainguard, cableguards, cam covers, snorkel & front mudguard plastic bit I was quoted £200.
And yes, it does look like carbon!

  14. Sounds reasonable, any links or photos?

  15. Haven't had it done yet, when I do I will post pics.

  16. I had a look at some pics online, hard to tell how real it looks, would be interested to see a side by side comparison of dip vs the real deal!!!

  17. If that's dipped then that works for me! :upyeah:

So far though I've got all my bits through conquest carbon, top quality stuff and Steve at conquest is really good to deal with.....Well recommended (p.s I'm not on commission or anything  )

  18. Yes it's dipped. It's just one of 6 different patterns my local "dipper" can offer.

OK - now the Ebay process is finished (I didn't get my money back) I can name names.
The Seller is based in Hong Kong, Joegray2008.
The return address is in Shanghai.

Absolute rubbish how this seller has such a high rating I don't know.

It is not possible to fit the part nor the chain/rear sprocket guard as the holes are not in the right place.
Redrilling isn't possible as the holes are in tunnels (hollow) and redrilling would make it too weak.
    What a waste of £155!!

I've put all my points to them, all I got was a returns number valid for 4 days only!!!
Ebay have been equally useless in helping.
Previously Ebay have been very helpful.
