This is my 998: I have never liked the grey wheels. I can't decide between painting (or powdercoating) them black or gold. What do you guys think? I think I prefer gold but my only concern is my 998 has a grey frame, not a gold frame. Note that the rear subframe is red: I'll probably have this painted/powdercoated silver (to match the frame) at the same time I have the wheels done. Black wheels: Gold wheels with grey frame: I plan on doing the white tail regardless of wheel color choice, and probably a carbon front hugger as well.
As you like both colours equally what are the differences when you look at the bike from a distance? When I look at the bike with black wheels, the fairings totally dominate and the wheels are hardly noticeable. With gold wheels you definitely notice them. They are two very different looks to my eye.
black looks more racy, gold more of a classic look, i know you said you dont like the current grey but what about gun metal grey??
That's a good point.. in your example, gold is much better. I also think gold looks better on factory 5-spoke wheels, whereas if I was doing a Marchesini 10-spoke I'd probably go for black. If you've got any pictures, I'd love to see them. I could plastidip them in gold to see what I think -- if they look rubbish, I could plastidip them in black. I've never done it before, but I think it's very easy to remove? Plus I wouldn't have to remove the wheel bearings (which I'll need to do if I'm powdercoating them.)
I got mine sprayed (gold) so it would be easier to fix scratches and less work re bearings etc. The prices were lower for spraying too, but that might not be the same everywhere.
Both colours work for me but it's a personal choice at the end of the day, maybe another spare set in the garage when your moods takes you.
Gold is good on the older Tamburini, not my favourite colour for the later ones. Black looks good but hides all the wheel details. I agree with @cookster, gunmetal grey like the RS bikes.
That's almost exactly the end result that I'm looking for. I'm not sure the budget will stretch to the carbon bellypan, airbox and tubes but it looks bloody good. Oddly enough, my bike does not have red mirrors; they're black. @bettes where did you get your rearsets?
They’re Harris ones. They were one of the best that I had on the 998. Loads of adjustability. Don’t think Harris make them anymore but they do pop up on eBay every now and then.
