Hi all, I am new on here. I currently ride an 04' Fireblade and looking to purchase a Ducati. I have around £7,500 to play with and would like your opinions as to which one. Ideally something with low miles out of the 848 or 1098? Any suggestions hugely welcome but ideally with some reasoning behind why you think I should go for either? I ride whenever I get the chance (fair weather rider) in my spare time and don't need it for commuting (I certainly wouldn't be buying one for that reason). I may look at doing a track day or two but never have as haven't wanted to risk dropping something that would cost me an arm or a leg to repair! Thanks
Welcome When I jumped off an RR4 blade to an 848 I found it immediately as easy to ride fast, just lacking on power by comparison. You have to work it harder where the blade was happy in 5th everywhere But I ended buyng one 2 bikes later and its more than enough for most. Suggest you go try a couple see what you think. You may get higher mileage 1198 for that money which wold probably be better than an early 1098 overall
Thanks for that. I'm going to my local Riders dealer this week. Are there any common problems with either?
I have had the 954, then moved to the rr5, then the rr7, then the rr8 blade. Ditched then to a 749s. Took a little bit of adjusting. Dcuati's couldnt be anymore different. I then progressed to the 848. A 1098 / 848 will do the job nicely. Fireblades are great but I have zero plans to buy another one. Im extremely happy at the moment. A buddy has a 1098s, i rode it. You'll love it.
Later 1098 the better, some of the early ones had issues due to the Apple affect, i.e. sell it before its really tested! 848 seems to have been bang on out of the rate, other than a rad issue where they split but should have been replaced under warranty if its affected for that money you can easily get an Evo, much better imho than the early 848s, I've had both.
Indeed the 98s is indeed a great bike, but so is the 848. The biggest difference would be the clutch, Onlins forks and steering damper on the 98s, but with 7.5 you can afford to be picky
Thanks for all this guys it's much appreciated! I am leaning towards a white 848 only because A: I don't think I will need any more power for the road and have read reviews to say it's good on track if you wish to take it on and B:I think I prefer the white and the black ones tend to be a bit more pricey from what I've seen?
1098? Look out for main bearings, they are made of cheese. for that money your best bet is a 749R exclusivity all ohlins forged wheels depreciation free similar power to an 848 as most had full 57mm termi systems.
Hi Josh. I know Riders Cardiff have two 1x98s in stock (I test rode one of them before I settled on my current 848 Corse - not sure if both are 1098s or ones is an 1198. They are both red and one has a full termi system the other slip ons, I think the prices are a fair bit higher than your budget though). Thought the bigger engined bike was a beast, tonnes of torque but I'm glad I stuck with the 848 for the road riding I mainly do. I had a white 848 Evo before the Corse and it's just a beautiful bike to behold in the flesh. Much better than red, though many here will dissagree I'd be inclined to try to find a nice white s/h Evo privately. When I was looking there were a couple on ebay that went for ~£7300.
Cheers for that. I've looked at an 848 from riders that's standard. They have one white and one red and I definitely prefer the white. There's also one in Northampton near my sister. Unfortunately I've had some real bad luck with buying privately so would prefer to stick to a dealer. I know it will cost a bit more but it's the worst feeling in the world when you buy a bike and it's brilliant condition and a week later it decides to die on you! I would love a 1098 but to be honest, I know I'm not going to be able to use the power that's available on the road and although we all need more power, I would prefer to try and ride the guts out of an 848 rather than having the fear that in a millisecond I could lose my license or it's 0-60 in A&E time!!
848 is very capable, just look at the 848 challenge boys they are lapping Oulton at 4 seconds slower than the BSB boys
As I have said, having ridden litre bikes, the 848 is more than capable. The 1098 is a little more obviosuly so depends how you want to ride and what you want from the bike. Both '8's wont disappoint.
