Which Is The Best Air Cooled Or Not?

  1. Hi folks I'm thinking of buying a hyper I had an 1100 evo a few years back loved the grunt didn't like the fuel range. Anyone got any advise on the new 821 I've heard they don't have the grunt of the old air cooled? Another point is may be worth holding on until the bigger 937 arrives? Any thoughts.

  2. Try and get a Monster 1100 Evo :)

  3. Get an 1100, plenty of fuel range ;)

  4. I know you can get the bigger fuel tank but they come at a great cost. Also who can tell me when the valve clearance service is due on the air cooled and the 821?

  5. Had a look Rudolph on the link but can't find service intervals for the Hypers

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  7. Wow cam belts every 5 years. I thought it was still every 2 years. Pretty much maintainance free and valve clearance check every 18000 miles sounds good to me

  8. Yeah sounds great. I've been seriously deliberating whether to change my 796 for an 821. Now I find there's going to be a 937 so I'll have to wait and see that. I really love my 796 but would love the longer service intervals.

  9. Longer service intervals makes them a cheap bike to run. So many cheap bikes out there at the moment time of year and all that. Ducati Coventry have a 2 week old pre reg one with no miles on it they registered it to get their figures up its only £7995. I'm sure other dealers could do the same deal?

Do you do a lot if miles , is this why servicing intervals are important , just where you say it makes them cheap to run , most folk get Ducatis for the love of them and the whole soul and character of the bike rather than running costs .

  11. I can't answer for Stewart but I find It's a bit of a drag new belts every 2 years regardless of mileage and valves every 7500. I love my bike but would be interested in changing it for an SP with longer service intervals (obviously if I like it).

  12. To be fair I don't do that many miles I currently have an 1198s I know the 7500 mile service is around £1000 outch. I'd much rather spend that sort of money on some goodies for the bike. It's true what you say about Ducatis having soul and character. I recently took a speed triple R for a demo. Great bike but just lacked excitement.

  13. Is that dealer prices ? What about an independent with known good form , probably much cheaper and just as good if not better .

  14. My GT1000 has the 1000cc 2-valve engine. As I can't use the bike for work, I only put around 3,000 miles per annum on the GT. The bike goes to Nelly at Cornerspeed for servicing, and has a belt change & valve check every 2 years. The cost of that 2 year service has always been less than half the £1,000 mentioned above for the 1198s.
But then it should be remembered that there may be labour costs associated with bodywork removal on the 1198s, and the air-cooled engines only have 2 valves so the amount of time needed to perform the belt change/valve check service will be less than that of a 4-valve engine.

I haven't calculated how the servicing cost of an 821 compares with that of an air-cooled 1000/1100 over several years. It may be worth discussing with a Ducati service centre as there may be factors such as the annual mileage to take into account.
