I’m about to order a shim kit so that I can do my own Desmo services. I have a 2015 Monster 821 and a 2014 Multistrada 1200S GT - I’ve established that I need the Later 4V kit, but there are three options. 1) Standard Kit 2) Modified Kit 3) Modified Kit with MBP retainers. From https://emsduc.com/product-category/products/shim-kits-half-rings/ from the explanations I’m unable to work out the right one to get! I’m tempted to get the latter - but what is ‘modified’ about the shims, and what is the MBP retainer (are these the half rings?) my wife is visiting family in the US next month and I’m getting them ordered there, so import isn’t an issue. thanks for any help you can give MM
Hi, I just moved from the US to the UK and re shimmed two 848 evo motors right before I left. I can't recommend Desmo Times enough! (https://desmotimes.com/). If you are just going to bring the shims into tolerance, just use the standard shims with 1/2 rings. I think the modified shims are the bomb, but I am pretty sure you need to change them all over at same time. Apparently, you can double the shim check times. Desmo Times has a few great articles about them.
The MPB retainers are their alternative to the OEM half rings. Supposed to be better at keeping clearances in spec for much longer. They must be used with their modified shims.
As above, the MBP retainers are the way to go. I have them on both my 916 and M900 and I rarely need to change a shim. For the 7mm shims as per 916 etc. you need the modified shims to work with the MBP but on the 8mm as per the Monster, standard shims are used. Either way I would highly recommend and would definitely fit them to any Ducati of mine.
Thankyou all - you’ve pointed me in the right direction and I’ve found the information I need to make a decision.
I run MBP collets in all of my Ducati's. I put them in my '79 900SS Bevel 7 years ago along with lead free valve seats. I use it quite a bit* and haven't changed a shim since. *I've ridden over to the Isle of Man 6 times since fitting the collets. Steve R
With 16 of the MBP collets in the kit, it’s enough for me to do my multistrada in a few months and my monster when the time comes.
