I have a Ducati jacket which is mostly black but white panels on the arms and sides. These white areas are getting dirty, what is the best cleaning solution? I am using a wet cloth with a bit of washing up liquid but what is the best?
Swarfega on a cloth. Once clean, sponge thoroughly to remove all traces of the cleaner and once dry, leather feed or moisturiser Alternatively, Dainese Leather Care Kit | eBay
I use a combination. Soap and a damp cloth to start, followed by baby wipes and then leather food to finish. Tbh it's a right arse and I think future cleaning is going to involve paying someone to do it for me.....
I use the Auto Glym stuff for my bike leathers. There is a cleaner and a feeder and I'm well pleased with both.
I think the white sections looking grubby add a certain street cred. Spangly new leathers look a bit too fresh from dungeon for my liking, like a newly-released gimp.
It doesn't work.............well, not for long, anyway.........better off with Glidden External Masonry white paint............used by all good decorators (particularly in pubs) as a stain block...........
I was told by Paul Varnsverry (or some similar name) from Swift leathers about 25 years ago to use warm water with a drop of detergent, so have used that ever since. I don't find the leather cleaner in the Dainese kits remotely convincing, but the milky stuff is good after you've cleaned the leathers. Haven't found saddle soap any good either. I tend to clean mine often - who wants to walk around looking like a garibaldi biscuit? But white is asking for trouble. It will never stay pristine - it's just one of those things you have to live with. The blood of some insect will stain it and there you are. Leathers are like bikes - they should be acceptably clean, but if you want it pristine, you've got to have more time on your hands than I have.
Near enough...............He made mine 'made to measure' in 1990...........cost over £900, included Protek armour.............he probably said warm water and ordinary hand soap (detergent and Fairy is too severe), then when dry, rub Preslea Leather Preserver into them (actually I more or less soaked mine in the stuff)..... Apart from the elastic behind the knees they are still serviceable, but the white does need attention..........it got pretty filthy on the outfit, plus my name was on the white band across the back..............that's been pulled off since I was back on the road...no point in advertising who you are when you have lairy moment, I say.....
I'd have to look into it, but pretty sure I bought mine from him in 1990 as well. Wife did the design.
I'll second that. There was one other method I was told by a leather expert - dove hand soap. It won't damage the leather or stitching and will get even deeply ingrained dirt out. Use a soft nail brush and agitate it in, then wipe with a soft damp cloth
I've just been over my old Ashman leathers with some Autoglym leather restorer which I use for the leather seats in my BMW and they have come up a treat.
Yes........I remember the tea. He and I designed my one piece between us.......based on the Arai Giga helmet.......The suit is predominantly red and apart from some difficulty getting into it now 'cos of my arm damage, I wonder if bright red leathers are a good idea these days!!
