Who To Use For 900ss/sl Nos Spares?

  1. Any body know of a good parts stockist or somewhere to get harder to find parts? I'm after an old type Speedo drive apparently now unavailable from Ducati. Anybody know the difference between them?
    Thanks

  2. I know the difference............they changed in about '94..............I can tell by looking at the wheel hub on the drive side.

Where you will get one from if Ducati don't have them, no idea...........Post in Wanted.........

  3. Cheers for the reply, I'm guessing the new style can't be made to fit the old.?

  4. Pre 94 have a smaller drive I belive and the wheel bolt is smaller/diffrent bearings. I think it will be an ebay job to find another good used one, I could do with two to replace both of mine, they are a prices though.

  5. Hmmm I thought it might be good old eBay.!

  6. You can of course change the whole front wheel and axle (with the correct top hat bush) for the larger axle and which takes the larger speedo drive.............Might be cheaper than a new drive if you can buy one complete............make sure the grease seal is with it.

  7. Remember that the gearing is different when you swap from 17mm to 20mm spindle sizes.

  8. Speedometer is the same part number for both drives.............I checked with Ducati Italy.

    How does that work, then?

  9. If for whatever reason you do find you have to change gear ratio - memory fail so hope someone will be able to add clarity - but I believe the speedo 'gear and pinion' within the old and new units are interchangeable as had to do this mod on 851. You can carefully dismantle the unit (a small roll pin needs driving out) to swap them over. I think early gear (not pinion) is white and possibly later one is blue or visa-versa)

  10. Well I fiddled for ages with the guts from stripped down smaller and larger drive units.

Never found a way to make them compatible.

Neither is it possible for the drives to be interchangeable on the earlier and later wheels owing to the way the wheel hub housings for the drives are machined.

  11. Just bought Genuine Ducati one for my '93 900ss a few weeks ago from Moto Rapido in Winchester Moto Rapido Ducati Dealer in Hampshire . Mail order, delivered in about 24 hrs was about £18, about half the price of a skanky second-hand one off FleaBay!

  12. Cheers everyone for the time to reply, I'll have a closer look at the steindinse shop, it's possible Ducati didn't manufacture their own Speedo drive more likely it came from a specialist supplier maybe used on other bikes perhaps the guzzi one might fit, I'll have to look at what other bikes used the brembo wheels but I suspect you are all well ahead of me on that .cheers samurai I need a drive unit not the cable I tried that the other week too hoping it was just that!

  13. If the OP can stick up some pics of the faulty drive here so I can see exactly which one it is (need a pic of the housing in the hub as well, with the brake disc on), I might be able to repair it with some of the parts I have here......

Guzzis (earlier ones) took speedo drive off the gearbox......

  14. Cbeers Aq I'll do that at some point, I only mentioned guzzi as that was what came up on the link from tricolore, a drive unit for a 17mm axle but I haven't had a chance to look into it properly.

  15. Oops, sorry - thought you meant the speedo drive cable

  16. I had some trouble last year when I needed to replace my speedo drive, for my '95 (oil temp gauge), so the item fitted initially fitted read 30-40% high. I think I posted the correct part no. on here (which is the usual 10% overread typical / acceptable for bikes of the era..).
